Hello Folks, up for your consideration is one very nice looking and running 1978 FJ40 in Mustard Yellow. This unmolested and practically all stock and original FJ40 has 127,470 miles on it. Going through it this week I found everything still in working order. I only take her out now and then. With a pull of the choke this thing always starts strong. Crawls wherever I need to go, and is fun to drive. As you read through the description please refer to the pictures and study them. You will find well over 100 pictures HERE and I encourage you to view them as I couldn't fit them all on this page. The Interior :: The interior is in great shape. There's no rips or tears in the seats yet I don't think there original, probably a Specter replacement from the previous owner. The dash has two cracks on the top. I installed a Tuffy Security Products Series II Console with the gas spring and mounting kit with cup holders. I do have the original stock console. There is no radio. There are no speakers. I replaced all the interior lights with green LEDs except for the dome light. Yes the light in the headlight switch works. I have the OEM jack and turn sticks. The floor mats are not original. There is a small rust hole next to where the gas fill tube goes through the body under the silver gas fill tube shroud. The front and rear heaters work great. The window regulators work fine. The door panels are fine. The rear jump seats are fine. The rubber is fine. Lots of bolts replaced with stainless metrics and anti-seize or grade eight gold metrics and anti-seize. The electrical is fine with dielectric grease on connections. The under dash light, dome light, all that work fine. The Exterior :: The exterior is in great shape. It was a little dusty when I took the pictures. The previous owner had it professionally painted to the original color code of 532. The under side got a coat of POR-15. The top is fiberglass. Lots of bolts replaced with stainless metrics and anti-seize or grade eight gold metrics and anti-seize. There is a half-dollar size rust spot next to the rear right reflector. The windshield squirt on the hood isn't hooked up. The windshield gets its spray from above. Some 78' hoods had a knock-out for the squirt. I knocked it out and installed a new squirt in place of having to look at that knock-out. I was going to go that route with a new pump as the original one is a little weak. The front bumper is not original. I also have a matching "tailgate" to put across the back for use when the top is off and the ambulance doors are removed. Sometimes you have to wiggle the key to unlock the back door. Door handles and locks work fine. Rubber is fine. Original glass, yet I think the windshield was replaced at some point as it doesn't have the "TEQ" printed on it. It's got the rear flip windows on the sides. The Engine :: A strong runner. The engine block number is 2F 260025. This is the stock 2F strait six motor. The emissions have been removed. I do have some of what belongs under the hood and some of the electrical stuff that went with that is sill under the dash. Electrical plugs for all that under the hood are all in tact with the harness. The carburetor was replaced with a new one by the previous owner. The fan that keeps the carburetor cool works fine. When the previous owner removed the emissions there was some random gas line left that was capped off. The exhaust pipe and muffler are newer. It does leak a little. The electrical is fine with dielectric grease on connections. This is the 257.9 cu. in. motor. The Running Gear :: The running gear is in great shape. The clutch is fine. The transmission and transfer-case are both fine and shift smooth. They both leak a little. The axles and differentials are both fine. They both leak a little. The Birfield Joint seals leak a little. The Chassis :: The chassis is in great shape. I included several shots underneath the FJ40. There is some surface rust under the left front floor board next to the body mount. But not inside the cab. There is some surface rust in the small round cross tubes. The Suspension :: The suspension is in great shape. The bushings in the leaf springs and shackles are a little worn. The shocks are fair. The Steering :: The steering could use some work. It has the usual play but the tie-rod ends, drag-link, and center-arm should be addressed. See the paragraph below about what is included in this auction. The Brakes :: The brakes work fine yet if you stomp on them the FJ40 pulls to the left. The emergency brake doesn't hold very well. I adjusted it but it could use some further attention. Included in this auction are just about every book and manual you can have for this 1978 FJ40 which are all in new condition. As well is a new five piece tie-rod end kit, a new top drag-link end repair kit, a new center-arm repair kit, and two new Hella D.O.T legal European headlights. All from Specter Off-Road. Also a new relay kit from Daniel Stern Lighting for upgrading the headlight circuit to accommodate the Hellas so one can still use the original headlight switch. See the pictures. Well that about covers it. This is a fine rig and is in great shape compared to some. A survivor, barn find, what have you. Since I've owned her she is just something I take for a drive on the forest service roads "in my back yard". Be sure to read the auction terms below the pictures. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the FJ40, shipping, or overall transfer of ownership before bidding. The title is clear and the VIN numbers on the body and frame match. This is great example of an FJ40 that hasn't seen any abuse or neglect. Happy Bidding, Good Luck, God Bless, and Thank You. |
