1971 Triumph TR-6 Petrol Injected Model Description

The TR6 (built from 1969 to 1976) followed the TR250/TR5 and represented the “modern Triumph” for the 1970s. Its body was designed in conjunction with Karmann and was “rounded off” in comparison to the TR250/TR5.
TR6 engines were equipped with two different fuel intake systems - either dual Stromberg carburetors or Lucas mechanical fuel injection. Unfortunately, given new emissions standards in the U.S., Lucas’ injection system was the only fuel injection in the world dirtier than a carburetor and would not pass U.S. standards! Thus, all U.S. TR6s (left hand drive) were carbureted and limited to only 104hp. Home market units in England, right hand drive, were petrol injected (PI) and produced 150+ hp.
Optional overdrive was available to provide additional gearing in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The TR6 also featured independent rear suspension, rack and pinion steering, bucket seats, 15” wheels, disk front brakes, and a wooden veneer dash. Overall, 91,850 TR6s were built during its production run, with 83,480 exported world-wide.
CP53666 is a Heritage Certificate certified number’s matching car. It is rare in that it is LEFT HAND DRIVE, but is an original Petrol Injected (PI) car that was brought into the Americas. It was originally imported into El Salvador and, in fact, is the ONLY TR6 ever to be brought into that country.
Left hand drive PI cars were often times CKD units (complete knock down kits) shipped to other countries and assembled. This particular car was NOT a kit and was built in England. It is believed to be one of only twelve PI units ever brought into Latin or South America. It underwent a complete frame-off restoration, every nut/bolt, which took over 5 years to complete. Its mileage at 54,313km (32,588 miles) is completely original.
I purchased the car as part of my personal collection late in 1999 from the original El Salvadoran owner...who happened to be the El Salvadoran ambassador to the U.S.! His son assisted me with the import into the U.S. and I personally picked up the car in Miami with my trailer! The car was in wonderful shape, but I promised myself I would have it restored when possible.
Gassman Automotive in Virginia, a revered Triumph restoration shop, restored the car over 5 years starting in late 2002 taking care to retain as many of the original pieces as possible. The injection system was sent to England and completely rebuilt. In addition, the number's matching engine, number's matching transmission, overdrive unit, and suspension were all completely rebuilt as well. The car was 100% rust/accident free and "one of the best we've ever seen" noted Mike Gassman while restoring it. Even the frame was completely restored with all of the small gussets added that are common during restorations.
I have a ton more pictures so please don't hesitate to ask for anything. You can also go to my site for more pictures at http://www.atspeedmotors.com/CurrentInventory.
As noted, this car is a completely number's matching, correct color, correct option, Heritage Certificate TR-6 with absolutely NO STORIES...except that it is very, very rare and in stunning condition. It has won absolutely every show it has ever entered and has had ZERO mechanical issues since its restoration.
Right now, the car is in Southern California, and I can assist with shipping anywhere in the world! If you have a Porsche you'd like me to consider...let me know.
