1959 Volkswagen Other Description

Really nice 1959 Volkswagon dune buggy. I am the second owner, and have owned the vehicle for a decade. I bought it from the son of the original owner/builder who had built it in Indiana. The buggy is all still original since the build. The wheels are very rare and hard to find. Correct staggered alloys, with a very deep dish on the rear. The rear tires are brand-new, with less than 100 miles. The front tires are matching, with very good tread. BFGoodrich radial TA's all the way around. Rear tires are very wide, There are many unique items that were part of the build. The front seats are from a 1966 Mustang. The gas cap is either from a vintage Dodge charger or Dodge Challenger, I can't remember which. You can probably tell from the pictures. The tail lights are from a Ford Pinto. It has a Sony AM/FM CD player with an auxiliary jack. The gauges work, including a tachometer, and the speedometer and mileage odometer. Also, the oil pressure gauge and amp gauge also work. The wipers work, as do the turn signals, back up lights and horn. The body style is the most classic ever made for a dune buggy. The design is very similar to the Meyers Manx. The gas gauge works, but I never completely trust it. The gas tank is in the front. There is a chrome roll bar in place. There are both front and rear seatbelts. There are cracks at the seams in the lower portion of the front classic Mustang seats. These have been covered with real sheepskin covers. The nice thing about the covers are that they keep the bottoms of the seats from being really hot when the buggy is sitting out in the sun. The bright and dim headlights work. There are custom Sideview mirrors in place. The buggy fires up quickly and runs very well. I believe that the engine is a 1600cc dual port. It is very quick, given the light weight of the car. The transmission is a standard vintage volkswagon 4 speed with reverse. The gears can be a little tough to find on all of these vintage volkswagon transmissions, until you get used to them. It is a standard H format 4 speed.
The gold paint is in overall very good shape, with only minor blemishes. It shines very well. There is a removable soft top in place. The soft top bow is in excellent shape. The soft top is functional and waterproof and provides a nice shade. However, it looks better in the pictures than when you are standing close to it. There are places where the white finish is wearing thin, and the underlying tan material can be seen somewhat. This is purely cosmetic. All of the soft top snaps are functional. A new canvas for the soft top could be made fairly cheaply, if you chose to do so. I predominately drove the car with the top off. I have the side windows, clear plastic, that came with the car. However, I have never installed them. The plastic is weathered on these windows and the rear window. There are custom front and rear bumpers on the buggy which were made by the original builder. These bolt off, if you prefer the look without bumpers. Of note is that there is also a rear tow ball in place. This is very unusual for a volkswagon dune buggy. I was told by the builders son that the builder had a group of buggy enthusiast friends that used to drive the cars all around the Midwest, towing small trailers, to car shows where they would tent camp. That was the reason for the tow ball. The trailers were very light and just contained a small tent and a few related items. I have never towed with it, but is a unique idea. It would be neat to tow one of the trailers that are made to tow behind a motorcycle with the buggy. Could be customized to match the buggy for a very unique show car type appearance.
There are laser cut metal ladies on each side of the buggy that are bolted on. These could easily be removed if they are not to your taste. They were put on by the original builder. They match the paint of the car. My daughters always got a kick out of them. The speakers for the stereo are mounted up under the dash area in custom made boxes, out of the weather. The battery is brand-new, and I will include the receipt to the new buyer so you have a full warranty.
The buggy is a blast to drive, and draws attention everywhere. The car is currently located in Cincinnati Ohio, in my garage there. I also have a home on the coast of South Carolina, which is where the buggy has lived throughout my ownership, prior to me recently bringing it back to Ohio. The only reason for selling is that we are downsizing, and as a result I am losing some of my garage space and therefore it is time to part with some of my toys. It's killing me.
Also, tow bar mounts are present on the front bumper, with quick clip connects. The associated tow bar which quickly connects to the towbar attachment on the bumper is also included. If you buy the buggy, should you choose to drive in to get it with a vehicle capable of towing, you could use the towbar to tow the dune buggy back to your destination. Would also make it readily able to be towed behind an RV, should that be your choice. I would not recommend planning to buy it, fly in and drive it home. It is not a weatherproof vehicle. It's a 1959 VW dune buggy. Tons of fun and a real attention grabber. But not a cross country driving machine : )
