Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the “Volks-wagen” or “People’s Car” had to meet four requirements laid out by the German Government: to be fuel efficient, carry two adults and two children comfortably, be capable of reaching 60mph and feature an air-cooled rear engine. Porsche and his staff tried various combinations with the aerodynamic “beetle” shape and ultimately it was the designated Type 38, with split rear windows that became the Type 60 or “KdF-Wagen” (translated as the “Strength through Joy Car").After World War II the now British-controlled VW Factory was rebuilt and the model slowly entered mass production. The Type 1’s unconventional appeal in the traditional large car market of the United States eventually brought in strong sales figures and resulted in Volkswagen producing more Beetle derivatives, such as the Type 2 Microbus, Karmann Ghia, the Thing and the Type 3 platform of air-cooled flat-4 engine vehicles. Eventually the sales trend of the imported Volkswagens caught the eye of American Auto Makers and resulted in the “Big Three” producing their own compact cars. This would do little to change the fact that the American Public had become smitten by the “Bug.”1968 was the first model year that the Beetle received what many Volkswagen historians refer to as a facelift. New features were evident everywhere from new steel bumper design, to modern headlights and a more refined interior. Being more of a transitional model year, the 1968 Beetle boasts several one-year-only features such as a uniquely styled speedometer and specifically styled seats. This was the first time beetle seats featured a headrest. The longevity of the Beetle and the uniqueness of the 1968 model ensured the desirability of this marque for years to come.Finished in stunning Royal Red with a beautiful black interior, the 1968 Volkswagen Beetle sedan featured here was recently the subject of a meticulous frame-off restoration that sourced numerous new old stock pieces. The restoration was incredibly thorough and featured a full drivetrain rebuild. Being a desirable 1968 model, this Beetle boasts several one-year-only features and is incredibly well furnished with an assortment of rare options and accessories. It is incredibly well documented with its owner’s manual, tool roll, VW Wolfsburg Museum Birth Certificate, period advertisements, brochures, over $10,000 worth of restoration receipts and much, much more. We are proud to offer what is very easily one of the nicest 1968 Volkswagen Beetles on the market today to the most particular collector, investor or enthusiast who understands and appreciates the beauty of this great German classic. Classic cars have proven to be among the most resilient and rewarding investments in recent years with the Historic Automobile Group Index (HAGI) jumping 39% in 2013 and posting gains of 395-percent over the last 10-years. Finance rates as low as 5.9%.
We know that classic car financing can pose a unique challenge. Although a vintage or exotic car can be an excellent investment, some financial institutions attempt to apply standard “used car” rules for financing a classic car, which in many cases can make loan approval difficult.
We work closely with many banking institutions that understand recognize the collector value of classic cars and view them as an investment, which allows us to help you get the financing you need so that you can have the car you have dreamed of.
