1955 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Description

I purchased this partially restored 55 VW in May of 2005 from a well-known VW and Porsche collector in Memphis Tennessee, Dr. Mac Jones which he purchased from a Washington collector who purchased and brought it out of Canada in the late 90’s. (Documentation can be provided to new owner) He restored and rebuilt the motor, transmission and break system among other things.

I flew in to Memphis in May of 2005 and drove the VW home to Denver without a problem and spent months investigating Volkswagens in preparation of total restoration which was started in late 2005. A full photographic history of the restoration is available upon request. The full restoration took over a year and I was deeply involved in it, I also have many of the original invoices and the total restoration cost was over twenty-seven thousand dollars. The car was completely disassembled and restored as you can see from the photographs, the exterior and the total interior was restored to the original specification. I was relentless in the effort to maintain all originality and even had the interior clothe upholstery set imported from Germany. You can see in the photos of the interior where the upholstery installer install a white headliner. I had the headliner removed and replaced with a gray one as was the original. You will probably not find a more accurate restoration any ware.

See what was said about the car when I bought it. This is the text from the original eBay listing of 2005. See photograph, “Rare 55 Canadian Big Sunroof Beetle”

There is no warranty given or implied, the car is being sold as is.

Enjoy the photos and see the originality of this fine 1955 Bug. See all attached and ask questions. The Bug is ready to drive any ware. All restoration photos are available upon request and there is a lot.

Rare '55 Canadian Big Sunroof Beetle!

Rare 1955 Canadian Deluxe Large Sunroof Beetle. Yes they did make the large sunroofs till the model end of 1955 for Canada and US too. They also still had the solid rear aprons and single tip mufflers, but with the larger American style bumpers and bullet turn signals. You could order them either way in Canada. This car has only 47,000 original miles on it. It was put in the paper buy the older woman's kids who were selling it because their mother had been in a retirement home for some years and she was selling her house. So the car was in the garage and was going before the house was fixed up and put on the market.

The carpet and interior is original as you can see (tiered cloth) The carpet in the front by your feet is worn, (she must have worn some nasty pointed shoes) Vinyl had a much longer life! The headliner is new along with the new Stayfast sunroof top, (Wolfsburg West of course!) The interior paint is original, very nice indeed! Pan, motor, trans, front end all are factory matching original. The out side paint was all redone using the VW factory color book at the shop so it was mixed a PERFECT MATCH! Nothing has been diddled with.

When the car was purchased 11 years ago all NOS brake cylinders, shoes, wheel bearing and seals were installed. Motor was disassambled, hot tanked and cleaned like new new. You don't just run a motor that old that has been sitting for how long if you have any brains! Since it was open new bearings were installed, NOS VW, along with NOS VW rings and keepers and new seal set. Carb was done the same along with distributor and NOS vacuum biscuit. Trans was opened and same service was done to it, new NOS VW bearings. The old German mechanic said I was wasting my money and time on doing that. He said it was still factory perfect! I'm a perfectionist, what can I say! Front brakes had the same treatment also. Are you getting sick of me yet? I'm just being honest here folks, just ask Bill Dierickx, I did all this when I worked for him at Wolfsburg Warehouse that year 1994.

This is just like buying a NOS 1955. This car runs like a "Scalded Dog"! 2 years Later I sold it to my friend in Tennessee, he drove it for 100 miles than garaged it. This car has ZERO rust! Pull up the original floor mats and you could eat off of them! Clean with anti-bacterial soap first. But seriously if you want a car that is UNMOLESTED here it is. Sure the seats need to bee redone and yes, the seats frames should be repainted. You can get the correct seat kit from Tony Moore at Wolfsburg West along with the CORRECT spray paint. Than you'll have a number ONE CAR here. Nothing to be rebuilt.

When I was back in Tennessee last month April visiting we took her out of 10 year garage storage, put in a new battery, poured in 10 gallons of the 100 octane small airplane fuel from the little local airport. 2 minutes later just like in the Woody Allen movie, Vroom she came to life again, a little adjustments. Off I went after 10 minutes I was OFF! Ever had a stock 36HP pegged at 80 on the Speedo? She runs GREAT!!!!! If you would like to call and talk about her just email me and I’ll set up a time to call and chat. The owner is WAY to busy a guy so he has me selling down some of his collection. PLEASE NO CHEESE WHEELS OFFERING TRADES, STOP DREAMING!!! Thank you for your time, hope you enjoyed my story, it is all true, Michael.

Can help with finding a GOOD shipper in the US. Outside US will cost an additional $100 for my long distance calls and long hours of time hunting down International rates. Thank you again, Michael Ask Jon J. House I sell just the GOOD stuff! I sold the '63 Ghia a few weeks back here with only 17K miles on it! This car is from the same collection. There is NO JUNK in the collection.

If you want a new exact interior kit I just priced it for you over at Toney's place. It is for '54-'55 only, it is called Blue Bedfordcord. Complete kit with everything, door post, grab handles the whole kitten kabodlle $1600. Real live 'German Square Weave carpet and yes they have the correct round heater metal surrounds to. Is $477.60. After this you WILL have a number ONE CAR! The whole damn thing new, drive on brother, don't just park her. ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
