1973 VW Type III Fastback Fuel Injected
1973 Volkswagen Type III Description
This could be a really fun good looking car with a little effort. Body is mostly clean other than the passenger C-pillar and A-pillar (more on that below). It did run and drive great until the hardline between the front and rear brakes failed near the pedal box. The analysis below is probably more detailed than is good for me, but I like people to show up pleasantly surprised or happy, not feeling tricked. Others won't be this detailed selling, I am.
First 15 images are what the car looks like right now as it sits on a dreary Seattle day. Last 9 are what it looks like cleaned up in the sun.
The good:
- Body is in good shape overall.
- Fuel system, brakes, etc. had been gone through a few years ago.
- Was running about 4 years ago before I had to park it due to the brake line failure. Still starts, but gas is bad.
- Comes with, but not installed:
- OEM new carpet (current is a bit threadbare)
- New battery pan (current is rusted out)
- New spare tire pan (current had been ripped out)
- New rubber seals for front and rear trunks
- New working fuel level sender (waiting to install with the fresh fuel)
The bad:
- Needs front to rear hard brake line replaced - might be a weekend for a decent mechanic as it runs through the center tube or $600-1000 for a shop to do
- Needs fuel drained and system cleaned out
- Rust hole in passenger C-pillar, and passenger A-pillar (not visible with door closed)
- Car needs to be trailered or towed to you--if you're reasonably close I'll handle this for you if you'd like
The eh:
- Noisy speedo over 40mph (easy fix)
- Turn indicators don't stay on themselves
- Front hatch latch needs adjusting--more often than not doesn't want to open from glovebox cable
- Needs battery tray installed, currently battery just sitting on it
- Needs tire tray installed--some metal cleanup and bolting in
- Needs new door cards and seals around windows
- Passenger window doesn't want to stay up
- Could use a new front windshield--delamination around the edges, but no cracks or chips--I was quoted $300 to replace including the windshield, you could probably install yourself too and cost $165
- Rear bumper a bit wavy
- Needs a good cleaning
