1971 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Description

1971 Volkswagen Beetle Standard Sedan Matching Numbers W/ 66,890 Original Miles. Mostly original standard beetle (not Super Beetle), restored Elm Green exterior, original Cork seats front and rear, original headliner, package shelf, original three-point seat belts in front, standard seat belts in rear. VIN/chassis number is 1112423609, engine number is AE201871, and as far as I can tell from talking to the previous owner and inspecting the car, the motor and transmission are completely original and unmolested. The 1971 made in Germany/USA delivered Beetles came with the 1,600 cc dual port motor rated at 50bhp DIN, 60HP SAE-gross. This car cruises easily at 65-70 mph, and will top80mph -driving it is like being in a time warp to the 1970s. Everything on the car works including the original AM radio, wipers, lights, turn signals, backup lights, horn, speedometer/odometer, and dome light. The gas gauge works but does not register higher than about 2/3 and shows close to empty with about 3 gallons left. The steering, brakes, andsuspension are tight and precise, the clutch is solid, and the motor runs very strong, with only a couple of very minor (and typical) oil leaks. The only mechanical issue of note is an occasional grind when downshifting into second at relatively high speeds, but not always. Highway mileage with the dual port is about 26-27, which I achievedon a recent trip from the Twin Cities toMilwaukee., and this car can be drivenanywhere. The car is extremely clean and rust free, including underthe rear seat (see photos, including original factory sticker by the seat manufacturer)with two exceptions -there was some surface rust in the spare wheel well which has been repaired, and there is one small spot, also repaired, adjacent to the driver's side rain channel above the window - this could be easily made almost perfect by a detailer. And unlike most Beetles, even the restored ones, the heat works perfectly. All of the glass except the windshield appears to be original. The four tires on the car are in very good shape and the spare tire is new. The wheel for the spare has a small leak in the rim which I tried to have someone repair but it failed - it could probably be repaired but a new wheel might be easier. Includes original tools and jack. The car is located 20 minutes north of downtown Milwaukee and can be test driven upon request. Clear Wisconsin title in my name. Please call 414-708-8133 with any questions. Additional photos provided upon request. I can helplocate a shipper if you need one, butyou probably don't if you are east of the Rockies. Offered with no reserve.

RE: The Pitcairn dealership badge on the engine lid, from an April 11, 1997 obituary:

"AUTO-DEALERSHIP FOUNDER, 72 Garthowen Pitcairn, 72, founder and former president of Pitcairn Motorcar Co. in Langhorne, died of cancer yesterday at his home in Huntingdon Valley. Mr. Pitcairn founded the dealership, which at one time operated 17 new car franchises, in 1958 and continued as president until he retired in 1973. It now operates two: Volvo and Volkswagen dealerships."

The car may have been sold by Pitcairn, no way to tell from this view.
