1971 Volkswagen Bus, Van, Westfalia
1971 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Description
1971 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Bus. This was originally a California bus and was at one point traveled to Pennsylvania then found a home in NY. There is 148,000 miles on this Bus.I purchased this bus as a bit of a project as it had been sitting for 2 years in dry storage. It had undergone some minor body work and was painted at some point in the last 5 years prior to me purchasing it. The original paint was white or beige so the door jams etc do not stand out like a sore thumb. It looks great from 5 feet but is not perfect. The paint shines like new but shows blemishes like scratches, chips, nicks and a few dents. It is excellent “driver quality” and cruise in style however it is not show quality. The crank out bay windows all work perfect. All the lights are in working order as is the horn. The door buzzer even works. The wipers work as they should. The heater duct is nicely intact and the heat controls actually work. I replaced the canvas top with a high quality replacement and it fits and works perfectly. The pop top cot fabric was also replaced as was the child cot fabric. The z bed(back seat) was recovered and works perfectly. The passenger rear jump seat was recovered and a small sliding shelf was built under it. The cargo area floor is rock solid and a hardwood floor was installed. All new blue curtains were installed throughout the bus. I was going to build a custom cabinet where the old closet was but I have not got to this yet. I do not have the sink/cabinet for the bus. It did not have one when I purchased it.The driver and passenger seat were professionally reupholstered in tan and blue to match the interior. The front carpet was replaced as were the kick panels. At some point the front floor was replaced as were both battery trays, all typical spots that rust. These repairs are already completed. I intstalled the spare tire mount on the front. The previous owner told me the engine was completely rebuilt with new heads and valves however when I purchased it, the engine would not start. I adjusted the valves and now it starts and runs perfect. I have pictures of the heads to prove they are new. Apparently the engine has between 5 and 10 thousand miles on the rebuild. I changed the oil and cleaned the carburetor as well. The exhaust is a little loud as the muffler could use replacing soon. It’s not super loud just louder than a brand new muffler and I want to be honest about the bus. The tires are in great shape and are load rating specific Hankooks with whitewall inserts. The wheels are original and were plastic dipped black for the look. The plasti dip can be removed very easily to reveal the original wheel color. The undercarriage is very very clean and the frame is rock solid. No rust holes or rust issues on the undercarriage. Very clean The brakes work great however the pedal is a bit a hard. It does not bother me and the bus stops without issue. The pedal returns fine as well. Only reason I say this is because my 72 Bus brake pedal seems a bit softer. Not sure which is normal. The sliding door works perfect. The bus starts, runs, stops and drives fine. The transmission and clutch work as they should. This is easily a daily driver as I do not see any major issues. The steering seems tight as well. This bus looks very good and the interior as well as the pop top are in excellent condition. It is not perfect as it just turned 48 years old but it is very nice and has the majority of all the repairs that go wrong with these vans.It is currently stored in my secure shop and can stay there as long as it takes for pickup at no cost. I am selling this bus as I am currently out of room for storage and need to downsize a bit. I currently have a 72 Westfalia that looks identical to this one so I do not need 2. Please only bid or buy if you plan on paying. I do not have time to relist and relist due to non payment. I do not want to pay for storage during the winter and have set the reserve very reasonable so another enthusiast can enjoy this camper. 1971 VW Westfalia camper is highly desirable and the value is continually rising. Please contact with questions and I will answer them as fast as possible. Feel free to make offers. I am very motivated to sell. $200 non refundable deposit immediately through PayPal.
