1985 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon GL Description
This is my 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon GL. This car is currently registered and insured, and I drive it regularly. It's a running, driving car with some issue and some upgrades which I will do my best to fully explain.
First of all, here are all the issues I am aware of:-Numerous dents, cracking, slight rust at the seams of some panels. The most egregious flaws in the paint and body are all photographed in a truthful light so no one is surprised!-A crack in the windscreen, running diagonally across the driver's half of the glass. This may be a problem for inspection in some states, but it passed state inspection here in NC.-The A/C does not operate, and there is no compressor. The lines are still present, and the separate blower unit on the ceiling operates normally, but provides no conditioned air.-The power steering belt is off the car, and I have never tried to address or diagnose the system. It has no power steering.-The emergency brake works to hold the vehicle in place, but is not extremely positive or strong-The instrument cluster has a bulb out.-There is an aftermarket radio present, but no speakers, so there is currently no working radio.-The front and rear windscreen washers do not work.-The interior is generally a little tired, but not stinky or threaded. I have a blue area rug on the rear floor that looks nice and covers up the holes from the missing middle bench seat, and I will include a pair of nicer gray front door panels than the warped, faded ones on the car.
-The tires are more than 10 years old, and have some dry cracking in the sidewalls. They have held pressure for the past several years, so I haven't replaced them yet. For a long range, out-of-state trip, I would replace the tires.
-THE ODOMETER IS INOPERABLE. I can NOT guarantee the mileage on this vehicle. I know the previous owner, and believe the mileage to be approximately 170,000 miles or less.
Sheesh! Sounds like a lot, but this is a European car that's more than 30 years old. I'd rather scare away a potential buyer than misrepresent the van! Anyway, here's the good news:
-The headlights are upgraded to non-sealed lamps with replaceable, high output H3 bulbs with an aftermarket twin relay setup from a Vanagon specialist.-The starter solenoid circuit has been upgraded with an aftermarket load reduction relay from a Vanagon specialist.
-The fuel tank has been cleaned and resealed, a common service item for these vans around this age. New crossover pipe grommets and hoses were installed, as well as a new fuel filter.-The van has the optional rear "z-bed" which allows the rear bench seat to slide forward and lay flat. With the cushion in the trunk, this allows for a nearly full size double bed area for sleeping.-The front ball joints have been replaced, and there are Bilstein HD shocks at the front wheels as well.-The engine oil, transaxle oil, fan belt, and spark plugs are all less than 1000 miles old.-The top end of the engine was rebuilt by a local technician about 8 years ago, to address the common head gasket weeping issue these engines have. I have no receipts, but the proof is in the fact that the head gaskets do not weep!
