1974 VW Thing - Type 181 - NO RESERVE
1974 Volkswagen Thing Acapulco Description
1974 Volkswagen Thing - NO RESERVE
CONDITIONActual mileage is unknown, the speedometer has been replaced at least once. Typically Volkswagen's of this era are known to have rust issues. This car was fully restored 20 years ago, garage kept has no rust in the pan. There is damaged sheet metal behind the passenger side rear seat that was hidden with bondo. I removed the body filler and cleaned the area but no repairs have been made. The car has not been driven much, I do start and run the engine and drive the car on my property. It has been registered and fully insured since I purchased the car.
ENGINE / TRANSMISSION1850 cc Engine with dual 40 mm Weber carburetors. (not EMPI replicas) 110 Cam, ceramic coated headers. The charging system has been converted to a single wire alternator. Stage II Kennedy Clutch and Pressure Plate. CompuFire electronic ignition with 8mm wires. Less than 150 miles on the engine. The engine has been set up for "full flow" an oil filter and oil cooler can easily be added to the engine. Transmission is from a 1970 Karmann Ghia to allow the car to cruise at highway speeds without over revving the engine. Standard large Thing axles with new CV Joints. Rear trailing arms are reinforced. New Coker - BF Goodrich T/A radials are mounted on stock 14" black powder coated rims. VW style "bolts" have been replaced with studs and lug nuts. The car runs and drives.
BODY /ACCESSORIESMy plans were to repaint the car, since I can not verify that it is an original Acapulco and it does not have the required Acapulco accessories. The drivers side rear fender was replaced and the running board was lost when the rear tire blew out while towing. The car has a convertible top frame and new black convertible top. I also have a full set of windows and window bags for the car that will need to be rebuilt. I also have a set of black seat covers for the front seats. I do not have time or extra cash needed to bring the car back up to show quality. I would rather someone else take it on rather than let it sit and go to waste. While the car looks good in the photos it does have a large number of dents and dings in the paint. The rear passenger side door is completely rusted out, but I have a replacement door. A Volkswagen tow bar is included but not recommended for long trips.
FURTHER INFORMATIONIf you have any questions or need more photos please contact me. I have made every attempt to list every possible issue with the car. The car is sold as is with no warranty expressed or implied. You are bidding on a 45 year old car that could have issues I am not aware of.
