1973 Volkswagen Thing Description

This 1973 Volkswagen Thing has great upgrades and a terrific color combo inside and out. It makes for added distinction to what's already one of the most distinctive classic VW's around.

Volkswagen's Type 181 was already so intriguing that they officially just called it the Thing in the USA. And this one really seems to embrace its uniqueness with a color theme that showcases it so well. The bright yellow can get this one noticed from blocks away, and this more modern clearcoat paint has the right kind of finish that fits in with Jeep of Volkswagens. It's nicely contrasted with the black on the bumpers, side curtains, rocker stripes, an upgraded wheel package. The black vinyl top looks new and helps give this car a well-coordinated almost two-tone like appearance. And because this looks so good in place, it has been altered to remain attached (however, it won't require too many adjustments to return this to a full convertible.) They even invested in the details, like new headlights and taillights. The result is a classic that has an attractive look to go with its distinctive style.

The two-tone yellow and black continues inside. It's a well-done setup, right down to the black carpeting. There are even nice details like the yellow sticking around the black shift boot and the two-tone sport bucket seats up front. The grippy factory-style steering wheel, crisp VDO gauge, and upgraded EMPI shifter are all part of the classic VW cruising experience. And because a good driver needs great tunes, there's a marine-style Boss AM/FM radio with Bluetooth.

While the look of the Thing is unique, it still keeps the hardy and mass-produced heart of the Beetle. So it has the familiar 1600cc motor flat-four setup. There have even been nice newer investments including the distributor, belts, and fuel lines. It fires up readily from the push-button start on the dash, and it runs strong like a proper VW. The control of the four-speed, wide modern tires, upgraded front disc brakes, and the traction advantage of the engine over the rear driving wheels makes this surprisingly versatile and absolutely fun to drive.

All VW Things are rare considering they were only sold in the USA for two years. And this example takes rarity and mixes in a solid investment in keeping it looking good, feeling good, and running strong. So don't miss this Thing, call today!
