1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Custom Camper Van Westfalia
1984 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Description
NO RESERVE!! This Vanagon will sell to the highest bidder for whatever the public decides she's worth on May 22nd!
Job loss forces me to sell this wonderful little camper van. Only used her a few months and a few times to camp. She was a GL originally that someone outfitted with the Westfalia camper interior, not sure when. But everything works! Propane stove, sink, refrigerator, the back bench folds down into a bed, and as you can see in the photos there are tons of little cubbies for storage, a closet with a clothes rack and long mirror, storage under the bench, and overhead in the back. Captains chairs swivel all the way around and there are two places to mount the custom wooden table! Curtains go all the way around, there's even a rod with a matching curtain you can put up behind the captain's chairs so you have complete privacy if you want to camp on the street incognito!
She was my daily driver two years ago when I bought her, so she'll be easy to register, lights and blinkers and everything work as they should, I've driven her about 20 miles since bringing her out of storage and she still can hit 80 easily on the freeway (not that you'd want that gas mileage). Little bit of surface rust but I think the patina looks nice. Because of the odd color door it might be cool to do a cheap paint job to freshen up!
There is a little ripple in the body over the driver's side rear wheel, probably from someone getting a little too up close and comfy with a tree or something, but you'd never notice it under a nice iron ladder leading up to a big roof rack for all your camping toys! The rest of the body is solid, laminate faux wood floor in the kitchen area. I installed an accessory battery under the driver's side seat but neglected to charge it through the winter so it's dead. Good news is all the wiring is done and the CD Player/stereo (newer speakers, too!) is separate from the car battery, so just replace the accessory battery and it will stay charged from the alternator as you drive.
No AC was offered in these in 84, she has heat though, and air (whatever temperature the outside air is)! Starts right up just fine in the winter, she has a one year old high torque starter and a fuel pump from the same time period, brand new battery as of today, new oil change and filter. She's ready to be camped in, or even lived in! Just get a gym membership for a shower and a toilet and you're good :)
She's an old vehicle, there will always be things to improve and you should be into working on cars if you want a Volkswagen Vanagon, it's a labor of love keeping these beauties in working order. That said, I've babied this one, she runs like a top, and the transmission shifts smoothly. If I didn't have kids I'd be living in this thing on the beach right now. Take the plunge!
If the auction goes over $6k I'll throw in a 4" memory foam pad (custom sized for the VW foldout bed) with a nice cover that really upgrades the bed!
The engine is solid, of course it eats oil and coolant like most old VWs, I always just keep on eye on the levels and fill as needed, keep up with routine maintenance, you'll be fine. MPG is somewhere between 15-18 around town but could be improved with a tuneup I'm sure! Try finding an RV with that kind of gas mileage/maneuverability! Purrs like a kitten. Brakes feel good, tires are in great shape, and look at those hubcaps! Live the Van Life / Tiny Home Dream!
Sold as is, where is. Fly out and drive it home! Or ship it. All questions before bidding please. This auction is listed locally as well, I reserve the right to end the auction up until the last 24 hours.
