This is a really cool bus that has a lot more presence in person!

Commonly called a high roof for obvious reasons, this classic VW bus was originally converted by Adventure Campers in California when it was a new vehicle. Unlike many other conversions, the Adventurewagen was based on the Deluxe model which gives it a unique, upscale appearance thanks to two tone paint, aluminum accent trim, full headliner, vinyl interior panels etc. From the lack of rust, we can assume it remained in California for many years before migrating to the midwest in the late 90's where it eventually ended up in storage for 20 years. We purchased it as an incomplete restoration and have spent the last year creating the bus it is today. Our approach was to preserve what we could, replace and restore as needed and reimagine the bits that were missing.
Starting with the basics, again this VW has a clear, correct NC title in our name. 1971 is one of the most desirable model years, especially for the 68-79 "bay window" busses. This is the only model year for US spec models where these vehicles came with the upright 1600cc air cooled engine and disc brakes. Besides the camper conversion, the bus was stock and correct when we started with it and for most part, still is. With the condition and the extended storage, we believe the mileage is accurate. However due to the age, this vehicle is exempt from odometer reporting here in NC. It is also exempt from state inspection, but would pass if it was still required. The chassis and body are both solid, not rusty or wrecked. The bus is clean, presentable, roadworthy, up to date and in properworkingorder.it has been thoroughly serviced, has the correct tires and is ready to enjoy. We can provide details on what has been done by our shop.
Here is a general rundown:
Electrical: New battery, installed battery charger, 12V USB outlet and interior lighting. Everything works.Engine: Rebuilt stock 1600cc engine installed 20 years ago, but hardly used. Has been disassembled, cleaned, sealed, painted, tuned, new muffler, electronic ignition, tune up bits etc. Runs great!Fuel: new fuel tank, lines, pump and sending unitTransmission: original 4 speed, fresh gear oil, new shifter bushings, release bearing etc. shifts easily and stays in gearTires: All 5 wheels have been refinished and have correct Hancook LT tiresBrakes & suspension: Inspected, cleaned, parts replaced as needed
This vehicle wasn't in bad mechanical shape when we got it, and probably could have been driven just as it was. The majority of our time and expenses were related to nicely reassembling the bus after paint.
The exterior has been completely repainted close to it's original colors Pastel White over Niagra Blue. The windshield, body seals, glass seals and door seals have all been replaced. The result is a tight, solid, good looking bus. Having arrived without the original camping interior (which was heavy, bulky and ugly anyway) we had the opportunity to come up with our own design. We opted for a clean, simple, bright and open look with a few nice touches. This bus would have originally had an all black vinyl interior, so we went with a whole new set of panels, an original back seat with a Z-bed conversion for camping, all three seats reupholstered, new headliner, cargo mat, rear deck cover and cushion. We have added a custom wine rack to address a hole left in the passenger bulkhead where the stove once was. On the opposite side is a simple folding table with cup holder, similar to the removable tray on the dash. The major focus was in the high roof which is trimmed out more than it would have been. Here we mixed Birch, headliner fabric and aluminum, added shelves and an extra 12V outlet. The storage cabinets are lit and lined with Birch and Cedar so that clothing and bedding can be left in them. The windows and vent have been serviced and have new screens. With these open the bus is surprisingly cool inside. Other items added to the bus include an 8' folding awning, 110V electrical system and an installed battery charger. We have left the interior as sort of a blank canvas for the next owner to personalize.
With a stock 1600cc engine, this bus is not fast. But it's definitely fun to drive in it's own way, and certainly fun to be around. It's a nice example in excellent condition, but not too perfect to use and enjoy. We imagine it will draw a crowd at shows, campouts and events. We hope whoever buys it will camp, travel or at least drive it. We know that serious buyers will have questions. We will gladly answer them and provide any additional information about the condition, what's correct, what's incorrect, service performed, the upgrades, Adventure campers, and busses in general. We just wanted get enough in this listing to get the conversation going without overloading the details. 118 photos can be seen on our site MYAUTOFOCUS. We have tried to be thorough and would appreciate that interested buyers check out the photos already provided before asking for more.
