1968 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Description

This is a very original numbers matching 68 Karmann Ghia auto stick convertible in excellent condition. I bought the Ghia 26 years ago from Beetle Mania in San Mateo, California. They restored the Ghia before I bought it and from what they told me they did some minor body work to the nose, passenger side fender and passenger side rear quarter panel (no panels were replaced). The Ghia was originally Velour Red and the exterior of the car was repainted using original Velour Read VW paint from the dealer. The interior was also replaced with reproduction basket weave vinyl as original. The interior is in good condition with one wear spot on the driver side seat and the driver side door panel has some wrinkles in the vinyl. The top and headliner are in excellent condition with no issues and it comes with the top boot cover. The top mechanism is a bit stiff and it takes a little fiddling to crank closed but it is in good working order. In the 26 years I have owned it I have only driven around the bay area and haven't put that many miles on it. It has always been meticulously maintained (I have a pile of repair invoices that go with it) and it has always been stored in an indoor garage. Since my ownership it has never gone to the body shop and the 26 year old paint job looks like new with no bubbles or cracks. Both doors open and close perfectly with no binding or sagging hinges. The hood and decklid both open and lock as original with no issues. There are a few small nicks and dings in the paint, but all very minor. I have looked it over carefully and I don't see any rust issues. The bottom of the spare tire well has a little surface rust (see images above), but the rockers, the area behind the front wheels, the area in front of the rear wheels, the area behind the front wheels, engine bay and pans show no signs of rust or paint bubbles. The Ghia sports an auto stick transmission and it works perfectly. The engine appears to be the original numbers matching 1500cc four cylinder engine and it runs smoothly with no issues. I don't know how many miles are on the speedometer, but the car drives, brakes and handles as original. There are only a few issues with the Ghia that I know of. The original radio does not work, the enamel on the Karmann Ghia fender side badge is cracked and there is a wear spot on the driver side seat. The electrical system works perfectly with no issues (except the original radio doesn't work). It's in great running condition, though I haven't been able to drive it much in the past few years and would recommend a good once over before it's driven long distance. It comes with the original owner's manual, original jack, original tool kit (missing one or two tools), the top boot cover, and a pile of service invoices from my mechanic at Beetle Mania for the past 26 years. I have more photos of it as well and am happy to answer any questions about it. It has a clean California title in my name.
