1988 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper
1988 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Description
This is a 1988 Vanagon Westfalia full camper. These versatile campers continue to appreciate in value over time as no one has yet duplicated both the utility and charm of a Volkswagen camper. Let me start out by saying this Bus is very very original, well maintained, and clean. It was never used to follow the Grateful Dead or Phish by a group of 19 year olds. Not that there is anything wrong with that! It has been adult owned and babied it's whole life. Let's look at the details....
Mechanically, this Vanagon starts and runs very well. 210k miles is about average for the age of the van. We have a large stack of receipts from over the years. The engine was rebuilt a while back and lots of recent maintenance done. This Bus has the desired 4 speed manual transmission (yes, that extra gear in the manual transmission comes in handly while crossing mountain passes) It has the desired manual roll down windows (nothing extra to break!) The tires are close to new and have the recommended strong sidewall for the extra weight of the camper. This Vanagon needs nothing to get in and go.
The Vanagon has the original paint in good condition. It is so rust free and dry, it looks like it was garaged all of its life. If you know Vanagons, then one always looks at the body seams for rust, especially along the drivers side. This has absolutely NONE. All the original camp stickers along the drivers side attest to the fact that it has never had rust or been repainted. The undercarriage and the fender wells are also in excellent rust free condition. There are two small dents in the Vanagon. One small scrape on the very back of the drivers side and one fist size dent in the quarter panel on the passenger side. Neither really detracts overall but would not be expensive to fix if you wish.
The interior is in incredibly clean unblemished condition. It sounds weird but this Vanagon smells good! Lots of vans that have been used for home, travel, and play tend to get a little stinky....but not this one. Look closely at the front seats, especially the drivers side bolster. These are almost always broken down a bit from getting in and out of the Van. But NOT on this Vanagon. The adjustable arm rests work well and the seats swivel around to face the side and back. The rear seat looks equally as good as does the upstairs bed. The upstairs canvas is in good shape except for a tear in the very back. This could be easily patched with an adhesive patch. The front screen is good with no holes found. The camping gear looks to be in good condition. We have not tested the sink/stove/fridge but all look to be in excellent condition. This Vanagon came with factory AC but the compressor had been removed when we got it. Although these vehicles were never known for having the best AC, even when new, the AC system is still intact and could be made to work again if desired. Or you could just roll down the windows!
If you are looking for an original Vanagon Westfalia camper, you would have a hard time doing better than this one. Roof racks are also included so you can throw your surfboard or kayak on the roof.
