1985 Volkswagen Vanagon - Good condition for a 31 year old van! NO RESERVE
1985 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Description
Listing my 1985 Vanagon. Love my van, but I want an older one. I've got the bug now and want to go older. I've had this about a year and a half - bought on eBay. Interesting story - I got this thing from a guy in North Carolina who brought it east from Oregon where he tells me a large animal vet owned the bus and used it for house calls. Cool story, if true. Anyway, he got it - painted it (not a high quality job), tuned it up, put some tires and brakes on it and sold it. I've had good luck with it. Original window sticker is shown. Kind of neat to have some of the history. This thing was even a work horse last summer when I rebuilt my deck.
DEFINITELY turns heads and folks like to talk about it. It's a good 20-footer. Up close, you can see the wear of 31 years of use. Rust seems minimal - there is some showing at a body panel seam on the driver side. Still, looks pretty nice. Good stereo and the fog lights even work. There is a bolt or something center top of the van over the front seats. Painted over. I'm guessing a CB or some antenna was on there at some point. There is a trailer hitch. No idea why.
Seems to run fine and doesn't leak any oil. It does seep a little coolant from the heater under the rear seat - not a lot and not all the time. A common problem in these I'm told. Haven't had any time to troubleshoot.
Interior is in fair shape. The car never had a middle seat. I had it put in last summer. Carpet and seats are solid. The track for the driver seat needs repair. I never moved it. Headliner is good. There is no interior panel on the sliding door. Wasn't when I got it and I never replaced it. I did have the mechanism rebuilt. Another common issue with the vanagons it seems. Everything on the dash is operational - including the clock! Good stereo.
Drives well. Little clicking when cold, but once warm she seems to go and go. Have added coolant - presumably due to the issue at the heater.
Had work done last summer - invoice attached. I had it tuned up, new plugs and fluids, put window tint on, had the middle seat installed and the door mechanism done. When they went to do the seat, they found a rust issue. I had it fixed and coated so that's taken care of.
Anyway, have enjoyed my bus. Please let me know if there are any questions. Vehicle is sold AS-IS, where is with no warranties of any kind. I do have the Carfax from when I bought it if you want to see it.
I may be able to arrange transport for you, but would prefer it be picked up in the Northern Virginia area. I don't see any reason it can't be driven a long distance, but please know I've not taken it on trips longer than 50 miles or so; it's been an around town weekend warrior for me. The longer ride was one time and was last summer through the VA mountains. It got a little warm, but I'm assuming that was because I hadn't yet checked the coolant level! Has run just fine since with no issues. Please let me know if there are any questions.
A $500 deposit is due within 24 hours of auction's close. Balance due on pickup of vehicle within 10 days of auction's close.
Please note that last photo is just one of my van visiting an older brother... Helped me also get the bug for the older Type 2's!!!
Happy Bidding!
***Added the invoice for work done last year. I'd forgotten to attach before.***
***I went over the old eBay ad from when I bought it in fall 2014. It also got brake pads & rotors at that time.***
***Note I can send more photos if requested. The bus is not a pass thru. There is a bulkhead between the front seats and the rear of the van. Seems pretty rare. Can provide photos if anyone wants to see.***
