VOLVO

1987 Bertone Touring Car

Decent low mileage car with exceptional stealth aftermarket high end audio system!

Increasingly rare and appreciating classic, Featuring Italian styling and Swedish Engineering and Dependability!

This 780 is one of 4 that I have owned. It's been on my watch for about a decade, and has largely been a carport queen during my time of ownership. The car is originally from California, and was never driven in bad weather here. This solid little car has never let me down and has logged a couple of extended road trips, always starts right up with no issues or stumbles and steps thru all gears as it should. This is the 1st yr model, featuring the decent (but oft maligned) 2nd gen PRV V6. I have owned another 87 V6 that I drove to 320 K miles before it needed top end work. So, don't believe the naysayers re. an engine they know little of (1st gen v6s were rotten though i do agree). I too prefer the smooth quiet torque of this six over the more buzzy turbo 4.

The car presents ok overall. Obviously it is not new, and exhibits some wear, bumps, and dings one would expect on a 31 yr old car. While most tend to elevate and exaggerate the condition of a subject car they are selling, I believe in honest disclosure. Don't let it scare you, the car is decent, appealing, reliable and eye catching. Anything you purchase, short of a concourse level restored car will exhibit similar...whether the seller mentions it (or not). Use the details to make an informed decision and bid accordingly.

The car uses mobil 1 synthetic and has had regular changes as scheduled. No unexpected consumption, no smoking, and no noted driveway drips either. Brake lines were purged about 4 yrs ago, coolant changed and always use distilled water. Front rotors and pads replaced within the last 200 miles too. She is however to the age of needing new belts, hoses and tires...only incident to age, Other items of note: Motor mounts and rear nivomat shocks should also be replaced. Valve lash adjustment is due too.

Paint is fair for age. Still shines up, but there are several small chips and a few dings and scratches (review pics) and rear passenger quarter has some swirl marks. Ideally a repaint would benefit the car, but she looks nice from 5' now, and still garners many compliments. The grey plastic trim is fair, exhibiting some "alligator" marks of the plastic capped chrome door trim as is commonly seen on Volvs of this era. Grey plastic front and rear bumper inserts look decent.

The car does have a factory volvo hitch installed, although I have never towed anything. One bertone side pillar script missing (have spare). There is no known rust on the car (aside from a few surface freckles where paint had chipped). I checked and purged the rear window tray drains when I got the car (while I had the interior partially out of the car for audio install), all looked good and I have kept it dry since).Interior is a mixed bag. Back seat leather is perfect, front pass seat is ok, drivers seat has seperated leather and not all electric seat functions are operable (switch related and a common prob). Lexol is applied 2 x annually. Headliner is shabby and sagging with some staining. Interior panels are fair to very good. I replaced the drivers door panel trim with one from another car and matched the interior paint. Dash has cracks which I repaired and also sourced a proper fitting dashmat cover. Burl wood trim pieces have some varnish crazing - all the common 780 issues. All windows, power mirrors and sunroof are fully functional, as is the passenger seat. Cig lighter is disconnected. Antenna does not fully extend, Climate control unit was replaced with a new unit when I purchased the car. AC needs to be recharged. Heat functions correctly. Trunk gas springs are needing replacement. Windshield washer pump was needing replacement. Horns and all horn buttons work. All lights work (have the rear center brake light removed as I was going to tint rear window. Defrost works.

The car has a very custom and largely stealth aftermarket high end sound system. I'm an audio engineer by trade and spent months designing something that would look stock, but offered vastly superior performance over the factory system. No harnesses were cut, and the original Alpine made Volvo amplifiers are also in use, driving the front and rear mids. (the radio alone cost $750 - and the entire system around $3,000 - plus the painstaking labor of doing things carefully and properly. The pioneer Premier deck is feature rich, and also has an XM receiver module connected. The front end unit offers cabin correction eq, time delay for the 4 independent zones, and so on. The system has a custom 12" sub that vents thru the back seat arm rest and a 1200 watt amp, and bass level control. Sub amp has a loose input level control (ez fix). The car has a new $300 Optima "yellow top" battery too. The car also features a factory Volvo security system. The car can be disabled if the remote "proximity" device isn't present on your key fob. Of note: the car must be started every 3-4 days or placed on a trickle charger, as this feature does drain the battery.

All in all. this is a decent older 780. With a little bit of sorting she can be a beauty, and with even less attention, a soliddaily driver with a lot of life remaining! Aside from aged tires and aged hoses, I wouldn't hesitate to drive this 780 cross country.

This car comes with many extras too! Far too much to mention - some illustrated - some not. Everything from spare bulbs, to other parts from my other 780s too. Also I have the clutch pedal kit, should you ever want to change to a 4,5, or spd stick.

The car is ready to go. I have too many projects and inadequate health to deal with all.

This opens at a very fair price - about half that of the custom stereo!
