1978 Volvo 242
1978 Volvo 240 Description
This 1978 Volvo 242 is not exactly the prettiest of vintage Swedish steel, but it is full of potential and runs like a champ. I aquired this from an older gentleman who wanted to make sure it ended up in the hands of a Volvo enthusiast. Sadly, I have too many projects to be able to do this car justice, so my loss is your gain.
First off, the engine runs great! I drove the car home and had zero issues. It does need a new clutch, but it is drivable as it is and could be babied a little longer. The odometer reads 157k miles, but does not work so the actual mileage is unknown.
Huge pro: it has working A/C. That's right, this 38 year old car has cold air conditioning! It does leak and the previous owner said he recharged it from time to time with a hybrid type of freon. But it works!
It certainly has a few rust issues, but most seem to be non-structural. I do not see any in the floorboards or frame rails. There are some spots in the typical places where these cars start to rust (rocker panels in front of the rear wheels and in the quarter panel rgbit behind the rear wheels), and some rust peeking out from behind the windshield trim. The worst rust is on the lower radiator support and a little on the inner fender below the battery. A leaking battery at some point in this cars life did a number on those parts. There is also some rust in the trunk under the carpeting, but no through holes.
The interior is fair at best. The upholstery on the passenger front and rear seats seem ok with no real noticeable rips. The drivers seat is a replacemet out of a 244 so it doesn't fold. It is a similar color upholstery, but doesn't match the other seats. The headliner is intact but dirty. It is the standard white vinyl that has a little dinginess due to 38 years of dirty fingers. The windshield has a crack on the passenger side and does not obstruct the driver's view.
This car is far from perfect, but deserves a home in the caring hands of a Volvo loving fool like myself. If I kept it, I would probably turn it into a 242GT clone. But again, I have too many projects and not enough time or space.
I have tried to be honest and accurate in my listing. That being said, feel free to ask me questions. I will try to respond as quick as possible. This vehicle is being sold as-is, where-is with no warranty expressed or implied. The shipping arrangements are the responsibility of the buyer, but I will cooperate as best I can to help facilitate shipping on my end.
Thanks for looking.
