1970 Volvo Other Description

1970 Volvo 1800 E Original Unmolested California Blue License Plate Car

This is a extremely nice and well taken care of California Volvo 1800 E. It has always been in California. This Volvo features the iconic and great Volvo/Jensen styling. It gets attention everywhere it goes! It is in a truly awesome original exterior/interior color combo. It has not been modified and is in stock, factory condition. This car is invery nicecondition and not like your typical one of these. The original California Blue Plates are no longer with the car.

There is NO rust through on this body as you would expect on a true California car. The floors, doors, and fenders are original as well as the quarter panels. You can still see the original paint and sound deadening material in the rear trunk hatch area. The original spot welds are also visible. The VIN Plates in the driver’s side door jam, a-pillar, and front radiator/fender are all present and; these all match. Additional things you should know to wet your appetite even more about this cool ride:

  • Original California Car - This means it is from a rust free climate

  • Original Documentation - There are some original repair and service maintenance records. There are also some DMV record info

  • Ownership History – I purchased this from the third owner. The previous owner to me purchased it from his uncle. The uncle purchased it from the original owner in 1989.

Standard equipment on this Volvo Includes:

  • Fuel Injection

  • Electric Overdrive

  • Reclining Leather Bucket Seats

  • Power Assisted Four-wheel Disc Brakes

  • Electric Rear Defrost

  • Deluxe Trim & Carpet with Locking Console

  • Plus much more…

Exterior/Interior/Mechanical Condition:

The paint is in nice condition. It is an older respray and was repainted/restored in the original color (#102) in 1989 at a cost of $2,815. These cars are notorious for rust especially in the lower rockers and lower front fenders. Rust repairs in these areas can be the most expensive part of restoring one of these. Another sign that this vehicle is original is an area often overlooked by most. There are two panel lines under the doors. These are often bondo’ed over if rusted or repaired; and these would not be visible. These are clearly both visible on both sides. This car has been garage kept and well cared for. It does have some paint imperfections on the trunk decklid.

The interior is also in great condition. The front seats have been reupholstered and the recaro style chrome hinges are in excellent condition. The rear seat and headliner is in great condition as well. All gauges work except the clock and the parking brake warning light. The radio in the picture is not included (it does not work). The upper dash has your typical cracks and has been covered with a dash cover. The lower dash is original.

This vehicle runs and drives. The electric overdrive also works. Recent work includes a new fuel pump, fuel tank, and fuel lines. The tires were replaced in 2012 and they have very few miles on them. Like most cars of this age, it does leave a few drops of oil on the ground and it is a little cold blooded. Volvo purists know these cars run for a long time. Most Volvo aficionados are also aware of a similar 1800 S (Coupe) that has been driven for 3 million miles! It is not uncommon to find these with very high miles and still going.

A couple of minor things to note; The front windshield molding trim is missing. I will include either a brand new set of trim beauty rings or the original ones; however, there are only two of the original style available. The front grille surround was also recently re-chromed and in great condition.

Other info to know about this vehicle and this auction

Please keep in mind this is a 46 year old collector car. I am not going to say it does not need anything; as I am not an expert and everyone is subject to their opinion and level of perfection. It does have your typical wear and tear for a car of this age. It does need a few things as I mentioned. I am not a mechanical expert and I have described it to the best of my knowledge. This car has been in California it's entire time. It is on a clean California title in my name. There is no warranty on it and TMU.

About the P1800 and the Saint:

This was Volvo’s first sports car in 1961. Leave it to Volvo to only improve over time with this awesomely designed car. The later ones are even more desirable as they introduced fuel injection and 4 wheel disc brakes in 1970 along with more horsepower. This one has all of these highly desirable features. This car also is pretty rare as production for all 1800’s was less than 47,492 units over 13 years of production. The E’s were only produced in ‘70-72 making this a fairly rare car. The coupe version of this vehicle became very well known in the TV series The Saint and was driven by Simon Templar (with license plate ST1), played by Roger Moore beginning in 1962. The car played a prominent role throughout the entire run of the show.
