DESCRIPTION

I came across this car by accident.
I was travelling through Central Florida to see a collection of cars an Estate Company was taking bids on, and on the way home, dang near put myself through the truck windshield when I came across this killer Wagon sitting out in front of a house with a FOR SALE sign in the window!
After meeting with the owner, getting the full story and history on the car, he tossed me the keys and said “go ahead and drive it, but just know you will buy it if you do”.
I turned the key, and with a cold engine just pushed the starter button in ever so slightly and the Wagon came to life. The idle is so clean and smooth and quite, you have to strain to hear it run with doors and windows shut, and it hums like a sewing machine with that great sound only the cast-iron 195.6 OHV motor can make! Pushing in the reverse button let the transmission snick into gear, and allowed me to back into the driveway, and a quick press of D1 had me ready for my test ride!
As I pulled into the street and merged with traffic, I was amazed at how tight, new, and solid the car felt. Pushing the accelerator brought ample power, and the car picked up speed easily.
I made my way to the toll road nearby, because the prior owner insisted that I get out on the road with it. As I slowed to pay the toll, I was surprised at how smoothly and efficiently the brakes felt, with no pulling, wander, or modulation to be found.
I pulled out on the highway, and let my right foot go crazy, picking up speed smoothly and cleanly until I reach what the speedometer said was 70mph. 70mph????? Holy cow, I didn’t even realize it!!!! I pulled out my GPS app on my phone, and found that the speedo was only 2 mph off of what the satellites where telling me, but even at 68mph, the car felt as stable, solid, and smooth as most modern cars do!
Handling is tight and sure, and the car has no odd pulling, noises, or issues when cruising down the road.
It steers like an extension of your arms, and anyone in the family can captain this cruiser without much effort, even with the manual steering rack.
No excess slop in the wheel, and an easy lock-to-lock radius thanks to the stock steering wheel helps make parking lot maneuvers a breeze.
I cruised about 4 miles at that speed before taking an exit and heading back, and noticed that all of the gauges were functioning and appeared to be correct and calibrated too! That’s a rarity on most of the older cars that haven’t had them replaced.
I took time while cruising to turn on the stock AM radio, and was shocked when I heard the local FM channel come through the speakers loud and clear! Turns out, way back in the 80’s the first owner had installed an FM modulator that works through the stock AM radio! It is hidden in the glove compartment, and when activated and set on the last memory channel in the AM’s pushbutton spot, plays clear FM channels with ease! Plus, the AM radio works like it should when modulator is turned off!
Since that worked out good, I figured I would try all of the other buttons, and was smiling ear to ear when I found that everything from the fan control to the vent levers, light switch to wipers, and even the cigar lighter worked like they should! Turn signals function, and make that lovely “tick-ting” sound we all love, and the floor high-beam switch does what it should too!
Returning to the house, I got a lesson from the owner on how to operate the optional TWIN-TRAVEL bed in the car. With everything folded down and flat, the entire inside of the car becomes a giant mattress, allowing you and your travel companions the opportunity to sleep in the car in more comfort than most of the shady hotels you’ll come across!
As we adjusted the seats and cushions, I was able to inspect the whole interior, and was astounded by how clean, damage-free, and solid it was!
The original copper finish shows wonderfully throughout the car, and the seats are in exceptional condition with no rips, tears, seam pulls, or any other signs of damage. They are clean and neat, but as I said above, the car has NOT been professionally detailed by me, so imagine how awesome it will look when you take the time to really clean it up good!
Door panels, kick panels, trim panels…all of it looks amazing, and shows only the lightest signs of normal use and no damage or disrepair.
Headliner looks amazing, and shows no signs of sagging, stains, or issues.
All of the trim pieces inside are original and beautiful, again with only light signs of normal use and no damage or issues.
Windows roll up and down with ease on all 5 doors. Yep, even the back window opens and closes like a charm with its chrome outside handle. The handle still locks with the original key too!
Glass throughout the car is clean, and shows only the faintest little mark or two from normal use, but no cracks, chips, or breaks.
Carpeting is so clean that I had to ask how he kept it that way! His reply was that “if you take care of your car, it will always take care of you”. No truer words have been spoken, and the condition of the interior alone was enough to let me know that the cars only two owners both felt the same way!
As we transitioned from the inside to the outside again, I was struck once more by the rare Algiers Rose Copper Metallic paint on the car.
After coming home, I spent some time doing some research and found that only 3,134 400 wagons were made in 1962, I was surprised that I could not find a single one in this color except for a link to an old eBay auction where someone sold a ¼ scale Promotional toy by AMC in the exact color combo of the real car! Wish I could find another!
Anyway, the paint on the car is absolutely beautiful, and color changes hue depending on how the light hits it, or if it is in the sun or the shade. It shows glossy, slick, and smooth regardless of if it is in the sunlight, or the streetlights hollow glow, and has no thin spots or anything like that either!
It has been kept indoors since new in case you thought otherwise, and the person I bought the car from has taken great care to clean and wax it on a regular basis, as evidenced by the photos you see in this ad.
The car has just a handful of two very minor imperfections to show from its 54 years of service, and these are things like little stone chips, a tiny scuff mark, and light scratches that you would expect to see on something that wasn’t a full frame-off restored type of car.
I have taken many close up photos from various angles so that you can see there is NOTHING that would constitute damage or disrepair on the cars finish, and that overall, it presents incredibly well from every viewpoint.
The frost white roof shows the same, with just an imperfection of two to be found if you really look for them, and clean, glossy, slick, and shiny paint everywhere else.
The prior owner used Turtle Wax in the old-school can since 1994, and based on the condition of this paint, I am going to go get some to use on MY car!
The body on the car is incredibly straight, and it doesn’t take but a second to realize that it is all original metal, all 100% steel, and all completely rust and body work free from front to back.
. THERE IS NO RUST OR ROT OR BODY DAMAGE
NONE.
NO RUST.
NO ROT.
NO BODY DAMAGE.
ALL 100% REAL ORIGINAL STEEL. ALL OF IT.
Door gaps, hood fit, and panel alignment is stellar, and none of the doors droop or hang, and even inside the tailgate shows clean and straight.
This is an exceptionally solid car all the way around.
The bright work, trim, aluminum, chrome and stainless finishes on the car are incredible when you realize they are original pieces too, and show wonderfully on the car. As you can see in the photos, the trim has light, natural patina that comes with age here and there, but overall looks astonishingly nice from the front bumper to the back door handle, and everything in between.
The worst piece of trim is the original antennae mast, which has oxidation and shows tarnished. I wouldn’t replace it, because it is original to the car, and I am sure that if you spent some time cleaning it, using some Mothers metal polish, and adding some elbow grease, it would look a lot nicer than it does.
That actually extends to all of the trim. It has NOT been formally detailed. You are seeing it basically as I got it, with the exception of a wash, vac, and wipe down with Quickshine Spray. If you take the time to go over the whole car from stem to stern and clean the nooks and crannies, polish and clean the trim, and wax and buff the paint, it is going to look even nicer than what you see in the photos below!
The car rolls on stock steel wheels, painted to match of course, and comes complete with two sets of caps. The original dog-dish units and the full wheel covers with Rambler logo shown on the car.
All of them are in very good condition, with light normal wear signs, and no damage or disrepair. I like the full size better, because it looks dressier, but a purist may want to go with the original caps. Either way, it is your choice, because the winning bidder gets them all!
Tires are modern radials with a classic thin-whitewall look. They have at least 70% of the useable tread life remaining, and no signs of damage or disrepair.
Open the hood, and you are met by a very clean and presentable engine bay that has houses the original 195.6ci OHV Cast-Iron inline 6 cylinder motor the car was born with!
It had been pulled and completely gone through not long ago, and the assortment of receipts shows that valve seals, valve springs, intake seal, coil, starter, plugs, plug wires, pilot bushing, flex plate, and full tune-up were recently done, along with a full re-coring and restoration of the original radiator in 2015, and a complete rebuild and refurbish of the braking system in 2015 as well.
The engine runs perfectly, does NOT leak or weep, and shows pretty enough that you’ll want to leave the hood open at car shows!
As stated earlier, it runs and performs flawlessly, and I just completed a 250 mile round trip in the car two weeks ago where it spent over 6 hours being driven in a mix of city and highway use, and it ran FANTASTIC!
It does not come CLOSE to running hot, doesn’t stutter or stumble, and doesn’t do anything it shouldn’t.
I am so sure of the cars drivability that I encourage you to buy it, fly in, and drive it home. I think it would be an EPIC summer vacation road trip, and think it would make the trip just fine!
Transmission is smooth shifting, fault free, and works perfectly in each setting without any issues or incidents.
All of the push buttons work like they should, and the original pull/push parking control functions perfectly along with the E-Brake.
Undercarriage, like the body on the car, is neat, and all original real steel from front to back.
It has not been sprayed off, pressure washed, or anything. The oxidation you see in the photos is just that, light surface oxidation that would come off with a wire brush. Normal grime and years of plain dirt too.
If you wanted to pressure wash and wipe it down, it will look better than it does now, but we felt that the history and originality of the car was best left preserved, so we did not do it. I hope you won’t either.
No patch panels, no replacement panels, no bondo, no BS. Just solid, clean, original floor pans and frame rails that have been protected by a light coating of what looks to be a factory undercoat. It is NOT thick, goopy fresh junk sprayed on thick to hide things! As you can see in the photos, it is just the normal style of Ziebart or other factory type rust preventative that still shows you the real metal underneath.
Make no mistake, you are not going to put mirrors under the chassis at a car show! It is not a detailed, restored, and painted up undercarriage. This is just a clean, straight, original, and untouched chassis that is ready for another 54 years of service.
The suspension on the car is solid and tight, and as stated earlier, the car doesn’t wallow or feel floaty on the road.
Like everything else on the car, general maintenance and upkeep over the years has kept everything from the shocks to the springs and the bushings and bearings all in good, clean, proper working order, so everything does what it should.
I think you could buy this car and use it for a daily driver without much issue at all!
The history of the car as told to me was that the original owner was the son of a former AMC employee at the Kenosha Plant. He ordered this car to be custom built, and took delivery of it in December of 1961 in Vineland, NJ.
William used the car as a summer vacation cruiser for his family, and it spent much of its life in indoor storage, waiting for the snow to thaw and those trips to the Hamptons, Jersey Shore, and the Pine Barrens.
I have the vehicle registrations for the car from that owner from 1962 to 1984, when he became ill and could no longer drive. It was placed in the garage for storage for a full decade before the family elected to part with it.
I also have the original owner manual, extensive receipts for past and recent repair and maintenance work, and almost every registration for the car since new.
The car remained in storage until 1994, when the 2nd owner purchased the car on its original “A” title, and with 77,396 miles showing on the odometer. Receipts and paperwork validate his ownership history, in which he had the car mechanically sorted out after its time in storage, and shipped it to his winter home in Central Florida for use as a the family car on those 8 week visits when they couldn’t take the northern weather any more.
The rest of the time, it remained stored inside, and set on jack stands to avoid having flat spots on the tires.
A year-round resident neighbor was tasked with checking on the car, and starting it once every few weeks to make sure that it was ready to go should anyone in the family want to come down for a visit.
Over the next 22 years, the car was driven less than 370 miles a year, mainly to the local grocery store and into town.
It was kept in tip-top condition so that when they came to Florida, they would have a reliable and ready to drive machine waiting for them.
I have bought and owned thousands of collector cars over the last 18 years. I would say this wagon is in the top 10% of them in so far as confidence inspiring performance and handling goes. I drove it, and I bought it, just like the 2nd owner told me I would.
Now, after spending a few months with car, driving it on a regular basis, and taking the time to safety check it and make sure it was ready for my worldwide customer base, I feel confident in extended the same offer to all of you:
IF YOU COME HERE AND SEE IT, YOU WILL BUY IT.
Even if you can’t make it here, you should still buy it. It will not disappoint.
IT HAS A CLEAN AND CLEAR TITLE.
IT IS SOLD AS ACTUAL MILEAGE WITH A TITLE TO CORRESPOND.
I think that about does it so far as information I can supply to you. As stated, I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE a private viewing of the vehicle, or you can have an appraiser/inspector come see on your behalf PRIOR TO BIDDING.
