Austin Healey Background:
In 1960, “The Motor” magazine tested an Austin-Healey BT7 3000 with overdrive discovering a top speed of 115 MPH and 60 MPH from zero in 11.7 seconds. Costing just £1,326, it seemed a bargain to enthusiasts and racers. Available in 2-seater form (BN7) and 4-seater guise (BT7), the car offered buyers a sweet batch of optional extras like wire wheels, overdrive transmission, laminated windshield, heater, adjustable steering column, detachable hardtop and two-tone paint to complement the standard features like a 3000cc inline 6-cylinder engine with twin SU carburetors and Girling front disc brakes. A popular car, 13,650 MkIs were built, 10,825 of them being BT7s, demonstrating the interest in a little extra space by many customers. Easy to drive and enjoyable, the 3000 Austin-Healey gave drivers a sporting experience without too much challenge, making them perfect daily drivers. These cars easily elicit images of sprinting along lonely, two-lane stretches of scenic roads, top down for destinations and adventures unknown. Often seen in the shadows of their contemporary Jaguars, Austin-Healey 3000s are really their own beast, offering an individual brand of motoring—lighter and nimbler, with a more direct and straightforward cabin, Austin-Healey have come well into their own with enthusiasts and collectors alike.
