1989 Bentley Mulsanne S, Eight, Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, Silver Spur
1989 Bentley Mulsanne Description
For your consideration, is a wonderful 1989 Bentley Mulsanne S. A perfect car for fun outings to dinner, drinks with friends or as a daily driver. This one is not a low mileage garage queen that has been sitting for years and is waiting for a new owner to use it, and then everything fails at once from lack of use. I've used this car as my daily driver for the last 9 months, and have corrected a few things along the way. I am an auto technician that specializes in European cars, so I purchase, drive and repair them as a hobby. While not perfect, it is a great example of this car, for a great price. It's condition would be rated as a good driver quality. The paint has a few imperfections that I have documented in photos, as well as some slight wear on the interior driver's seat and armrest, with the remaining bits of the interior being in superb condition. The leather condition and quality in this car gets constant praise from anyone who sees it or rides along. At some point in the car's history, a previous owner has had a complete leather headliner installed in the car, and it looks fantastic. The interior wood is an extremely dark hue andcomplimentsthe lighter tan color very well. There are very slight cracks in the clear coat for the wooden doorcappings. Theseare very slight and notnoticeablewithout close inspection.
Also included with the car are a set of sheepskin overlay mats, that are slightly worn, and somewhat sun faded, but I figured I would include them since they fit the car.
In the last 9 months, I have done the following repairs:Rebuilt the windshield wiper motor and lubricated the wiper spindles. All positions for the regular wipers, as well as theintermittent work correctly.Performed a full service of the car, including an engine oil and filter service with Castrol 5w50 synthetic oil. Transmission fluid and filter service with new pan gasket, the differential fluid was serviced, as well as the power steering fluid. The HSMO hydraulic fluid for the brakes and suspension was serviced as well, andreplacementof the rear accumulator gas springs, as well as the brake accumulators was performed at the same time. The brake pressure lights go out within 10 seconds if the carhasn'tbeen driven for a couple of days, and do not turn on at all if the vehicle is driven daily. The spark plugs, as well as the distributor cap and rotor were replaced. The engine air filter was replaced. So it is very up to date on service.
The stereo system that was in the car when I purchased it was poorly installed and only 1 out of the 4 speakers actually produced sound. The head unit is a nice Kenwood piece that even has a remote control, as well as a USB input, and can control internet radio directly from the radio's face. I replaced all the speakers and wiring with Kenwood component speakers for the front, coaxial speakers for the rear doors. A previous owner installed 6x9 speakers in the rear deck, so since the space was already there, I installed Kenwood 5 way 6x9 in those places as well. During the speaker install, I also added a small amplifier to give a clean sound. While, not a "boom boom" bass type of stereo system that could be heard for blocks, it provides plenty of volume if wanted, and a very clean sound. I also replaced the power antenna, as the one on the car was bent.
The power door locks and windows on this model are a very common failure point due to the incredibly tiny power wires that were originally installed at the factory. I installed upgraded power wires, added relays and rebuilt the window regulators so now the windows move up and down at the speed of a brand new car. The locks were also sticking and wouldintermittently not work correctly. Additional upgraded power wires as well as relays were installed to correct this problem. I also enjoy havingkey-lessentry on the car, so I installed that system as well, and it really makes the car more enjoyable, especially when driving it daily.
This vehicle is equipped with active seat belts, where the belt will move automatically along the edge of the door when opening/closing the door. The passenger side belt on this car can be quirky at times, and will sometimes not move forward when opening the door, which requires it to be released before exiting the car on the passenger side. Lubricating the track occasionally seems to solve this problem, but I did want to note it, as it may be bothersome. The driver side belt works as it should.
Recently, the a/ccompressor had begun to make a rattle type noise at idle, soI replaced the A/c compressor, as well as the drier and flushed the a/c system. The a/c has been converted to R134a refrigerant, and blows very cold. I also replaced all of the engine drive belts, as well as rebuilt the engine harmonic balancer at this time, as I found the rubber had begun toseparatein the middle of the balancer.
The front tires were replaced about 2000 miles ago, and I aligned the car. The rear tires were still in good shape, and have approximately 60% of their tread remaining. During this, I found the keys that unlock the hub caps were very worn, so I ordered 4 new keys as well.
Here are some items that need attention, cause let's face it, its an old British car, there are always some. The trim for the window switch on the right door is missing. I have the cover in the glove compartment, but not the trim. The spare tire/wheel is missing, as are the tools that originally came with the car. The speedometer reads approximately 10 mph too low when driving at speeds between 40-70 mph. For a perfect exterior, the car would need a repaint. I personally prefer acar that you can actually drive around and enjoy, not worry about every rock chip and inconsiderate person that may lean against your Bentley and take a photo, (this happens), it's very presentable as it is. The left windshield washer nozzle popped off, and Ihaven'thad time to replace it.
I have really enjoyed this Bentley, and would love to see it go to a new owner that would enjoy it. I am selling as I have multiple other cars, some very similar to this one, that I would like to dedicate my time towards. Please check out the photos, and if any additional photographs are needed, feel free to ask!
