1988 BMW M5 Description

1988 DINAN///M5
- 164k miles with service history back to the first service (see below for details). Regularly driven and rigorously maintained by an ex-Tesla Vehicle Technician / ASE Master Technician. While very low milage cars are attractive on paper, they aren’t as ready-to-drive or reliable as something that’s been exercised periodically like this car has been since I purchased it in late 2006 with 117k miles.
- Official 12-16 point Dinan vehicle (depending on the era as their points system has changed over the years). The VIN is recorded as an official Dinan vehicle according to their records and according to the paperwork included with this sale.
- 1 of ~30 E28 Dinan M5s made worldwide. For some background, Dinan’s standards are so high that their aftermarket parts don’t void your BMW warranty. And if BMW won’t cover your car, Dinan will. They’re so committed to excellence, their warranties are even transferrable to new owners. Their enhancements might be expensive, but so is R&D focused on optimization and reliability.
- A similar California E28 M5 with these Alpina wheels recently sold for $108k. It was fully restored but it also had over 200k miles. A Euro M5 in the UK sold for $130k last year. Prices vary greatly but you also get what you pay for. Hagerty’s valuation tool onlineshows how these landmark vehicles are appreciating rapidly and they aren’t going to be less expensive in the future. A Dinan M5 is that much more exclusive, collectible and fun to drive.
- This is a very well sorted M5 with several OEM weaknesses addressed. I wanted the car to run strong yet reliably while remaining 50-state legal and kind to the environment.
- Hand built on May 5th, 1987.
- Owner’s Manual signed by Steve Dinan (see photo).
- Paint freshly clayed and waxed by hand.
- Valve clearances checked 14k miles ago and they’re very stable.
- Recent compression test results, cold, forward to aft, psi: 201,193,193,194,196, 201.A very healthy4% differential matches how well the car runs.
- Professionally rebuilt front seats (leather, heated) completed earlier this year. It’s difficult to capture the feel, and especially the look, of the original seats and these really came out nice (see photos). I didn’t install the Motorsport emblems but I’m including a brand new set with the sale (and (4) rear emblems). I couldn’t bring myself to poke holes in the fresh leather, I like the cleaner look and they only take a couple minutes to install. $1,800.
- Interior periodically conditioned with Lexol leather conditioner to keep the interior healthy and smelling righteous.
- Professionally recovered B pillars earlier this year.
- Had a dent removing professional go over the car in February of 2015. Many imperfections were eliminated or minimized. $1,000.
- A California car its entire life (other than a previous owner taking it to Pennsylvania for a summer).
- Passed California smog on October 18th, 2016 with flying colors (see photo for results). The next owner, if in California, does not need to smog the car if registered within 90 days (before January 16th, 2017) for 2 years.
- Professionally refurbished AlpineCM5908head unit (radio with tape deck) and trunk mounted amplifier inspected in 2014. This original head unit has the very trick infrared touch strip to adjust the settings. Not all ’88 M5s came with this unique radio and it works like a charm.
- The hood, all (4) doors, engine, transmission and left front fender are numbers matching (see photos of VIN decals). The right front fender was replaced using official BMW parts and it perfectly matches the rest of the car.
- Clutch renewed 59k miles ago.
- Tires renewed 12k miles ago.
- Nearly everything on this car works and works well. The air conditioning (converted to R134a) blows cold, the transmission shifts beautifully, the On Board Computer (OBC) is fully functional, the ABS stops you on a dime, all the electrics work, etc. The only thing that isn’t 100% is the rear window defroster (the 4th line from the top doesn’t heat up but all others work perfectly), the far left service reminder green LED and the far right service reminder red LED. That’s it. If you reach for it, it works.______________________________________________________________________________________________
Upgrades:
-DinanDME (ECU) chip, 4th (final) generation (see photos for more information). $430 spent in 1992.
-Dinanexhaust camshaft sprocket (see photos for more information from Dinan). The improved midrange torque is ideal for this street car. Even after giving up a few horsepower on top (for a lot more torque in the middle), this car still pulls 335is (300 hp) all the way to 7k+ RPM like they left the parking brake on.
-DinanStage 2 Suspension System (struts, shocks, springs, front and rear sway bars). Front lowered 22mm, rear lowered 12.7 mm. $1400 spent in 1992/3. Fresh Bilstein Sports shocks installed again in 2012, $500, about 20k miles ago.
-DinanStage 2 Braking System installed in 2014, about 12k miles ago. E34 M5 “Nurburgring” brakes - 345 mm floating rotors and 4-piston front calipers with tricolor Motorsport decals up front. 300 mm ventilated rotors with E34 M5 calipers out back. The power, balance and pedal feel are truly wonderful. All (4) calipers were completely rebuilt and powder coated gloss black. $3650 spent on parts alone. These are the ultimate bolt-on brakes for an E28 M5.
-Dinanthermostat (colder).
-Dinanheavy duty control arm bushings in 2012, about 20k miles ago.
-Dinanpedals with UUC Motorwerks clutch pedal stop (V3.0).
-Dinanfloor mats, front and rear.
-AlpinaSoftline 17” wheels, p/n 36 11 158, hidden valve stems, 8” wide, refurbished in 2011, (3) center cap keys included. $3600 retail when they were last available in 2012.
-BMWM88/3, equal length, stainless steel, "bundle of snakes”, Euro headers. Look amazing, sound even better. $1300.
-BMWM3 (S50) timing chain tensioner upgrade (BMW p/n 11 31 1 405 081) and plastic timing chain guide installed in 2012, about 19k miles ago.
-BMWE34 M5 transmission vent upgrade (Getrag G280).
-Frank Fahey Motorsportscrankshaft hub. Allows for safe running at higher RPM available due to Dinan chip.
-Frank Fahey Motorsportsfuel rail. Not a normal production item, Frank Fahey personally modified this OEM fuel rail back in 2004.
-Begiadjustable fuel pressure regulator (and gel-filled fuel pressure gauge). Set to 60 psi to richen the nearly unsafe lean mixture due to the Dinan modifications (today’s fuel is not what it used to be). Bumping the fuel pressure 15 psi also resulted in an additional 15 rear wheel horsepower on the dyno and a much friendlier engine. To pass California smog, I bypass the Begi regulator using a simple bypass kit that’s included with the sale and takes 5 minutes to install (see photo).
-K&Nair intake system / filter. Sweet intake music (it’s not loud - but it is addictive), more airflow and lasts the life of the car.
-Auto-Markfront & rear strut tower braces: German made, polished aluminum. $400 and NLA.
-VAC Motorsports / Wizard Coolingaluminum radiator installed in 2013, $700.
-M Wrenchfront subframe steering bracket upgrade welded into place.
- Magnetic engine oil drain plug.
- Braided stainless steel brake and clutch lines (all (7) original, rubber hoses on the car have been swapped out for stainless steel lines).
- Headlight covers, clear, 1980s accessory that protects the headlight lenses and gives the front of the car a unique look.
- 3M fog light protective film, yellow. Easily removable if desired. Having the yellow light down low helps cut the fog and was inspired by the famous M5 Pirelli poster (see photo).
- Custom, heavy duty motor mounts: (2) left mounts with (4) aluminum cups supporting the rubber to metal bonds.
- Custom trailer hitch with wiring pigtail. (Was used about five times to tow a small, open motorcycle trailer to shows in the area.)
- Interior rear deck (at rear headrests) and 3rd brake light converted to black due to original items causing reflection problems in the rear window, a common E28 M5 upgrade performed by a previous owner. Original tan (Natur) brake light assembly included with the sale.
- LED lighting in cabin and trunk so you can keep the doors and trunk open for extended periods of time without killing the battery.
- BMW rear headrests for that proper four-door / four-passenger look.
- BMW center dash vent upgrade (allows for on / off control). Original vent included with the sale.
- BMW accessory, storage partition that replaces the ashtray. The original leather covered ashtray is installed in the car and the partition (brand new) is included with the sale.
- BMW accessory, color matched (Natur) coin tray installed in front, passenger door.
- BMW accessory front license plate delete, black "BMW”. Rare and no longer available.______________________________________________________________________________________________
Items included with the sale:
- Original Owner’s Manual (signed by Steve Dinan) and other original books and literature (see photos).
- Original toolkit and blue hand towel in beautiful condition (see photos).
- About 4” of receipts and records. Nearly every dime spent on the car, since new, is included in the sale (see photos).
- Keys: (2) BMW keys with lights, (2) standard keys, (1) valet key. Also including a BMW “M” keychain on the primary key (see photos).
- Alpina wheel keys: (1) original and (2) spares I had reproduced (see photos).

- Spare new A/C belt, 13 x 810 (not 800).
- Original pedal rubber pads (Dinan pedal kit currently installed).
- Spare glove box flashlight and assorted spare parts.
- Valve cover gasket, complete (4 pieces).
