1975 BMW 2002 Description

This 1975 BMW 2002 may look virtually stock at first glance, but appearances can be deceiving. Beneath the Hofmeister-penned bodywork, the car has been comprehensively upgraded with an M20 inline six from a BMW 325i and a matching 5-Speed transmission.

The car came to us with the upgraded drivetrain, handled by the engineer previous owner with professional help. The swap was facilitated by akit from Precision Performance, and gives the appearance of a factory built car.

The bodywork is all original, including the rockers and floors. This is the most solid 2002 body we have yet come across. The car was purchased from the LA-area about ten years ago, and brought to Saratoga Springs. The car has never seen a New York winter, and this shows in the original sheetmetal. The exterior has been treated to all new OEM trim, most notably a conversion new to European bumpers without the US-Market overriders.

The interior features deeply bolstered front sport seats and a sculpted rear seat from a BMW 6-Series. All of the gauges work as they should, including the pair of auxiliary gauges in the center stack. The dash is original and free of cracks, and the carpets and headliner are both new.

The engine bay is very nicely detailed, and the 168 horsepower six provides more than 60% more power than the original carbureted inline four. Numerous new parts are present, including a fresh timing belt, water pump, and Bosch ignition parts. The fuel injectors were replaced with upgraded units. A valve adjustment was just completed along with new top-end gaskets. The Bosch fuel pump, fuel filter and regulator are all new e30 325i items. The above work was completed by us this fall, and the car runs beautifully. The exhaust is a 2002 Turbo item, which has a larger diameter than the original exhaust but retains a stock look.

To help cope with the additional power the car features upgraded front and rear brakes, Bilstein sport shocks and struts, and an Ireland Engineering suspension kit including anti-roll bars.

Thanks to the upgrades this 2002 encapsulates the best of several generations of BMW, from the chassis to the engine. The car is ready to enjoy as-is.
