1972 BMW 2002 5 speed sunroof
1972 BMW 2002 Description
1972 BMW 2002 built as dual purpose fun car to be used on the street or the track. Polaris silver was the original color. Repaint was painstakingly color matched to period Polaris. Notice how many Polaris 2002s are painted a lighter more modern BMW color silver.
This was a well taken care of care since day one.
Engine is punched out to 2.2 liters fed by four Mikuni 40 mm side drafts. Aggressive cam and headers make for 180 hp, 5 more than a 20002 turbo.Power is transmitted to a limited slip 320i rear end via a 5 speed trans.
Steering box is genuine BMW quick ratio with no play.Front brakes are larger Volvo units for better braking.
No power robbing fan. Electric unit installed.Larger radiator as well. Car runs temp gauge in the middle all day long.
Engine bay could use a serious detailing but that’s not my thing. Left front rail was replaced because of battery acid leakage, otherwise very solid underneath.
Car is lowered by approx 1.5 inches. Custom made free flow exhaust sounds mean but not obnoxious.
Yokohama track tires currently installed with lots of tread remaining.
Car had A/C but it is long gone. Still has tinted windows though.
All three front grills are NOS $2000 worth. Also NOS are tail light lenses and rings, complete front turn signal, license lights, rear reflectors, sunroof seals, Nardi Steering Wheel. Badges are correct raised surface.
Installed Genuine BMW front and rear window seals and plastic insert trim.
The headliner is original and very nice as well as the pristine original sun visors. The front seat covers are original NOS BMW replacements ordered in the 80s. Rear seat is very nice original. Carpet is new.
Paint job is around 5 years old and holding up well with a few scratches on the sunroof panel as shown.
The car looks bone stock but will smoke just about any 02 short of an E30 M3 transplant. Eats $50,000 Tii’s For lunch in both acceleration and handling.
This a very nice 02 that is not perfect but wouldn’t take much effort to take it to the next level.
I would prefer that the buyer see the car in person or do a PPI. We’ll put it up on the rack for a complete inspection.
Come drive it, it’s a beast.
I have had some good questions and here is an update. The heater and defroster work fine. Fan works as it should. There are no electrical issues. All gauges and bulbs work properly. Antenna is broken and the radio is doa.I will get the car up on a lift and post pictures of the underside.Email me if you have additional questions.
