Best year, color and Euro version. Not too many in the U.S. in this configuration. Great candidate for restoration, or as fun driver.
Currently inspected in Pennsylvania and runs, shifts, brakes and drives nicely. Built in February 1972 delivered new to dealer in Höchst, Germany before being brought to the US in the late 1970s by a service member. The car retains a factory 1,990cc mechanically-injected four (non-matching numbers, but correct), and Euro front seats, as well as upgrades such as a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox, limited-slip differential, and MSD ignition. This “roundie” tii is offered with partial records, spare parts, and a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.
The body has been repainted in its original Golf Yellow (070), and various dents and dings along with some scratches, cracks and touch-ups. Visible upper front fender seams and a non-tii “snorkel” core support likely indicate prior front end repairs.
Trim includes flag mirrors and early aluminum-trimmed grilles. Side markers removed, new Hella H4 headlights were installed along with low-profile European-market turn signals. Taillamp lenses replaced with items from URO in the correct Euro color combination, and the older US-market versions are also included. The Euro rear bumper houses integrated license plate lights, and a 2002 Turbo-style spoiler is mounted on the trunk lid. Lovely extremely clean FPS 13″ five-slot wheels wear Falken tires. New battery.
A shock tower brace is housed in the trunk along with a relocated battery from 2016, a spare wheel, and a factory jack.
Fabric-centered Euro front seats are retained inside, while the rear bench was recovered in full vinyl. Tii-specific dash clock.
Lights and gauges working properly, and the headlight dimmer switch has been rebuilt. The 5-digit odometer shows 34k miles, though it was changed from a metric to US-market unit when the car was imported, so total mileage is unknown. An aftermarket stereo system includes an amplifier, seven speakers, and a subwoofer behind the passenger seat.
The 1,990cc inline-four has been fitted with aluminum intake runners and a Pinto distributor with MSD electronic ignition (ugly). The Kugelfischer mechanical injection system was recently tuned.
Shifting is via a Getrag 245 five-speed transmission from an E21 320i which was installed in February 2016 along with new master and slave cylinders and a fresh clutch. Power is transferred rearward to a 3.90:1 limited-slip differential. Several keys are included as well as the removed original ignition parts, front bumper overriders, a metric speedometer, various gaskets and small parts, and color-matched aerosol paint. Parts receipts date to the 1990s. Recent refurbishment for inspection at cost of $1,400.
