The First Generation Chevy Monte Carlo was introduced for the 1970 model year. The “Personal Luxury Car” concept was conceived by GM in 1969 and the Monte Carlo was to be the counterpart to the Pontiac Grand Prix. It was known originally by Chevrolet management under the working name Concours. Though the Monte Carlo was developed at Chevrolet under the leadership of Pete Estes, t was formally introduced in September, 969 by John Z. DeLorean, ho succeeded Estes as Chevrolet's general manager earlier in the year (after previously heading the Pontiac division, here he led the development of the Grand Prix).
The powertrain is the 350 cu in 5.7 L small-block V8 (known as the Chevrolet “Turbo-Fire”) with a two-barrel carburetor, ated at 250 hp, nd was mated to a column-mounted 3-speed Synchro-Mesh manual transmission. The dashboard was basically identical to the Chevelle except for simulated wood trim. The upholstery was a higher grade nylon (or vinyl) and the carpet was a deep-twist.
Transmission options available in the 1970 Monte Carlo included the Two-Speed Powerglide Automatic, Three-Speed Turbo-Hydramatic, nd a Four-Speed Manual. Other options included Power Steering, ower Windows, ir Conditioning, ower Seats, ucket Seats, enter Console and more.
