While we typically deal with slightly older cars, we recently had an opportunity to purchase a collection of five first-year (‘85) IROC-Zs and just couldn’t pass it up. Of the five cars, this black one is arguably the best of the bunch. It’s in absolutely phenomenal original condition, has very low mileage, and has all the documentation we could ever ask for, including the original window sticker and dealer paperwork, dozens of service receipts, and even the recall notices for safety belt malfunctions in the mid-90s. As it sits, this car is in need of nothing. It is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner, regardless of whether they intend to retire the car to a collection or use it as a daily driver. Exterior: Black paint is original throughout, as confirmed with an elcometer. Elcometer readings range from 2.0-3.2 across the entire car. There are very, very few blemishes. Imperfections to note include a light ding on the forward portion of the hood (PDR’able), a couple very minor chips along the passenger rear wheel well, which have been touched up and are only noticeable upon close inspection, as well as a missing letter in the “TUNED PORT” badge on the rear bumper. Weatherstripping is all in excellent shape. Interior: The interior presents extremely well. Optional gray cloth bucket seats look and feel close to new both front and rear. There is no scuffing on the outer bolsters and no tears or stains. There’s a tiny, tiny bit of wear on the passenger seat bottom, but it’s pretty much negligible. Headliner is nice and tight, carpet is in A+ condition. A set of gray floormats will come with the car as well. Glass is all clear and crack free. All powered systems are functional; this includes power locks, power windows, R134a air conditioning, AM/FM radio, heat, fan, front and rear defrost, rear hatch auto-open, all lights inside and out, wipers, cruise, and all gauges. T-tops are in excellent shape and are easily removed, a one man job. Dash is in great shape, with no cracks, fading, or warping. Odometer reads 38,819 miles and is accurate based on extensive service history combined with the phenomenal condition of the car and level of originality. Under the Hood / Underbody: Please take a good look through the underbody photos of the car, as it’s documented in detail and is in impressive shape. Shocks still shine bright yellow, and the factory-applied blue dabs of paint are still intact. There is no damage of any sort, and absolutely no rust. Even the brake rotors are free of oxidation. This car has been garage kept and babied and it shows. The Z28 IROC-Z came with a 5.0L 305cid V8 with tuned port injection, good enough for 215hp. While that doesn’t sound like a whole lot, the car makes the most of it, and is plenty quick. Even with the automatic transmission, the car will happily wind out and is always willing to break traction. There are no noises or tendencies of concern, this car runs and drives extremely well. It fires right up, idles cool and steady, doesn’t stutter under acceleration, tracks and brakes straight. Goodyear Eagle CS-Cs are in very close to new condition, with at least 80% tread at all four corners. I would have zero hesitation in flying in and driving the car home. Overall, this ‘85 IROC-Z is just about as nice as they come. With its low mileage, fantastic documentation, and excellent original condition, it’s sure to make the next owner very, very happy.
