1990 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 -- mechanic's special
1990 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Description
The bad:
The truck was broken into in September, resulting in a stripped steering column, a bad starter, and a nice extended crack in my windshield. (Also a broken rear window, which I replaced.) I pulled the battery inside, which I bought in 2014, so a trickle charge should get it going no problem. The tires are quality but getting warn (purchased in 2011), and the interior has seen better days (note especially the ceiling fabric, which deteriorated quickly in the Phoenix heat).
The good:
California truck until 2011, customized for my great grandfather on his cattle-ranch, I've had no major problems with it in my moves to Phoenix or St. Louis. Low mileage for a classic with the 350 small block, and the transmission was rebuilt in 2011 at 120,000 miles (making about 50,000 post rebuild miles). Power windows, cruise control, and a new A/C unit and radiator from when I lived in Phoenix -- this truck has never let me down. The rear window is brand new. The shell is custom fitted, and I still have the carpeted interior pieces, which are simple to re-install.
If I had just a little more time and know-how, I'd fix it myself. This was my first truck, and it still picks up and goes when you need it to. With parts on hand, a garage mechanic could get it running again fairly easily. But shops want to charge me an arm and a leg, and I don't use it to haul stuff and camp as often as I used to anyway, so here it is. $3500 as is or best offer.
