1964 Corvette Fuel Injected N03 Big Tank with J56 Big Brakes (Z06) Daytona Blue
1964 Chevrolet Corvette Description
1964 Chevrolet Corvettes/n 40837S104737, Engine no. 4104737 FI018RFDaytona Blue with Dark Blue Interior
Introduced for the 1963 model year, the C2 generation of Corvette was an instant hit. The car carried over the excellent engines from1962, but the remainder of the car was new, with now iconic styling and independent rear suspension for the first time. In 1963 and 1964, all cars were equipped with 327cid engines, and the most powerful of these was the variant equipped with Rochester fuel injection. This option commanded a significant premium (over 10% of the base price of the car) and was the most expensive option available other than the Z06 option, a comprehensive competition-oriented package that included significantly upgraded driveline, exhaust, suspension, brakes, and wheels.
This fuel-injected Corvette has been nicely restored in its lovely original color combination of Daytona blue with dark blue interior. The restoration was done by Jason and Bob Scarscone in the1980s, and has held up extremely well with only about 700 miles on the car since then with the appearance of a restoration done perhaps ten years ago. The car has a host of rare and desirable 1963 Z06 equipment on it, including J56 big brakes with correct dual circuit master cylinder, screened backing plates, M20 gearbox with same VIN as the car, F40 Z06 suspension (including larger front sway bar and significantly heavier spring rate coil springs), and N03 big fuel tank (out of VIN # 14,xxx 1963 Big Tanker Z06). The tank is not currently installed (but comes with the car) because current pump gas degrades the tank, so a modern 36.5 gallon fuel tank is installed with the same exact dimensions as the original, but the correct big tank luggage compartment fiberglass panels are in place. The original 36.5 gallon fiberglass tank comes with the car. The car also has an original set of Kelsey Hayes knock-off wheels and 4.11 Positraction rear end.
The car makes a strong cosmetic impression. The restoration was obviously done to high standards because it still presents crisply despite having been done some time ago. The paintwork was done to high standards and is glossy, with a few minor surface blemishes and the occasional surface crack. The body is straight and the panels fit and operate well. The bright work is very nice with light swirls but good luster and no pitting of significance. The wheels and tires are excellent, as are the glass and lights. The frame is rust free with no pitting. It is really in beautiful shape. Recently $17K was spent on the car to ensure that it was sorted and freshened as it has been in storage. We recommend rebuilding the brake booster although it operates fine.
The interior is equally nice, being in excellent condition throughout. The seats show light mellowing only, and the dashboard, carpets, door panels, and headliner are all excellent. The switches and gauges are extremely nice as well, all of which reflect the quality of the work that was done and the care with that has been accorded to the car since. The original big tank fiberglass panels are in excellent shape as well.
The engine compartment is extremely clean and nicely detailed. It is not quite show quality but in very remarkable condition for a driver level car. The attention to detail is good with Delco battery fluid caps and the fuel injection unit is in good shape and was recently rebuilt.
The car runs and drives well. The engine starts easily and is well-tuned, particularly considering that it’s a relatively early fuel injection system. The engine sounds good and makes great power. The clutch is easy to use and the gear change is positive with a robust feel and good synchromesh. The suspension is firm and works as it should and the steering is tight. The car currently has biased ply tires. I might recommend changing these to Michelin radials to better enjoy the car. The brakes are effective - the car does pull to the left under heavy braking (J56 Brakes?)
This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a beautifully-restored fuel-injected Sting Ray that is equipped with a full host of rare and desirable 1963 Z06 equipment. Finished in its attractive original color combination, this car provides a substantially similar driving experience to a Z06 at a fraction of the price. With a nicely mellowed restoration and these significant performance upgrades, this is an ideal example to use regularly in events or occasional pleasure drives.
Original matching number motor, transmission and frame. Frame is rust free and beautiful. Original 1963 Z06 tank out of 1963 Z06 VIN # 14,xxxx. J56 Brakes out of an original 1963 Z06 with rare master cylinder. This car won't last long as it is priced to sell and will not depreciate in value due to the rareness of parts, overall condition of car and originality of motor, trans and frame.
Happy Bidding!
