With its classic good looks and a deep shade cloaking its well-fitted exterior, this 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 is an undeniable head-turner. It's in great running form and harbors a stack of build receipts to document the array of top tier components it now features.
There haven't been many restyling efforts that have paid off greater than the one Chevy undertook on the Chevelle the year before this one came out. From front to back, the changes were substantial and were greeted with very strong enthusiasm. When Chevy declared the Chevelle "America's most popular mid-sized car", there wasn't much to argue about, and in this SS, you can see why the car buyers were drawn to it - with its fastback-like roofline, sculpted fenders and wide, rugged track. The Garnett red paint is a deep shade, a nice departure from the common "brighter is better" train of thought, and with trim black stripes accenting the sides and back, it's a killer look. Both the front and back bumpers sit nice and level, the vast majority of the trim looks to have recently been replaced and the badging on all four sides is looking especially crisp. In 1969 Chevelles received an all new front fascia, with a matte black backdrop contrasting with the chrome in front of it, and it's very well represented here. It's a very complete overall look.
The black vinyl interior remains largely in its original configuration and is in really nice shape. Both the front buckets and rear bench seat remain very well padded and comfortable and you'll find no serious evidence of wear on their surfaces. The still-clear original complement of gauges in the cluster are joined by aftermarket SunPro add-ons that include a tach mounted on the steering column, and oil pressure and water temp gauges looming just in front of the white-balled shifter. A straight-looking black dash pad sits over the top and, if you look to the sides, you'll see the vents indicating that this Chevy is equipped with air-conditioning. Take a look in the trunk and you'll find a clean blemish free surface along with a spare, just in case.
There's quite an assembly of superior mechanical components combining forces in this Chevelle, the most noticeable being the 396-cubic inch V8 sitting under the hood. It carries a Holley 4-barrel and Edelbrock intake sitting under the chrome air cleaner on top, a pair of chrome Moroso valve covers, a chrome alternator and aftermarket headers on its sides and, because of the spaciousness of the compartment it sits in, you can see every detail. The engine sounds and pulls every bit as great as it looks and has a surprisingly smooth idle to boot, pairing with a period-correct Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission and a 3:55 posi-traction rear end to make for a versatile drivetrain that performs well both in terms of initial acceleration and highway driving. A healthy-sized aluminum radiator, joined by a pair of electric fans, sits up front to keep engine temperatures in check. With power steering and power brakes that include front discs, this classic muscle car offers easy navigation and fade-resistant stopping power that's in good proportion to its power as it patrols the asphalt on a set of 17" American Racing wheels outfitted with Goodyear tires.
