Well cared for female owned pickup Number One selling pickup truck in the U.S. in 1950 Desirable five-window pickup cab 216 CID inline six-cylinder engine Three-speed manual transmission Ivory over black exterior and ivory and black interior Superb oak floor in cargo bedLooking for a classic Chevy pickup from the post-World War II-era? MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present this 1950 Chevrolet 3100 Five-window ½-ton Pickup Truck. This example was made in GM’s Van Nuys, California factory (VIN code 20) in March 1950 (VIN code C) and it was the 2,277th 3100 truck assembled there.
Dressed in a sharp ivory over black combination, the truck’s exterior looks great, with only minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The glass panels, including the split windshield and the triple rear windows, center, and “Big Windows” over the driver’s left and outboard passenger’s right shoulders, which made for easier lane changes and backing up. The truck’s lights are in overall good order; however, the driver’s side taillight is cracked.
The truck’s bodywork is straight, its engine bay is very tidy and the cargo area, with its oaken floor boards, looks fantastic. The steel step plates and the black running boards look great. The chrome, bladed bumpers are in very good order, with just a minor blemish on the rear one and a mark on the front valence panel near the front bumper.
This truck rolls on Firestone Deluxe Champion Gum-Dipped wide whitewalls, size 6.00-16 at all four corners, mounted on steel wheels with factory moon wheel covers and ivory beauty rings. The tires and wheels are all in excellent condition.
Under the hood is Chevrolet’s 216 CID inline six-cylinder engine, buttoned to a three-speed manual transmission with a column-mounted shifter.
Inside, the black bench seat is in great shape, as is the black floormat, the black headliner and three-spoke steering wheel. The ivory metal instrument panel, with its full slate of gauges and the black and white inner door panels are all in very good order. The fuel and temperature gauge is inoperable. The speedometer/odometer and the horn are inoperable. This is a radio delete model.
In 1950, telescopic shock absorbers replace lever-action type. Last year for driver’s side cowl vent, its handle is now flat steel, not maroon knob as in previous years.
Advance-Design was a truck series by Chevrolet, their first major redesign after WWII. It was billed as a larger, stronger, and sleeker design in comparison to the earlier AK Series. First available on Saturday June 28, 1947, these trucks were sold with various minor changes over the years until March 25, 1955, when the Task Force Series trucks replaced the aging Advance-Design model.
The same basic design family was used for all of its trucks including the Suburban, panel trucks, canopy express and cab overs. The cab overs used the same basic cab configuration and similar grille but used a shorter and taller hood and different fenders. The unique Cab Over fenders and hood required a custom cowl area which makes the Cab Over Engine cabs and normal truck cabs incompatible with one another while all truck cabs of all weights interchange.
From 1947 until 1955, Chevrolet trucks were number one in sales in the United States, with rebranded versions sold at GMC locations.
While General Motors used this front-end sheet metal, and to a slightly lesser extent the cab, on all of its trucks except for the Cab Overs, there are three main sizes of this truck: the half-, three-quarter-, and full ton capacities in short and long wheelbase.
Competition to this Chevy in 1950 was Dodge’s B1-B half-tons, Ford’s F-1 half-tons and GMC’s New Design Series trucks.
