This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 offers a great combination of vintage late '60s styling and tough big block power under its hood that benefits from a couple of well-selected add-ons for some extra muscle. Its curb appeal is undeniable, and with a price-point under $30k, it's bound to attract a lot of hits. The Chevelle had long been a respected member of the muscle car set and carried an abundance of style for quite some... time, but when Chevy decided to take the model through a fairly extensive restyling the very year this one came to life, they hit the mark squarely. Focusing on increasing its agility to go along with the straight ahead power it had already become known for, Chevy actually decreased its wheelbase while broadening its track and gave it a distinctive, flowing, almost fastback-like rear roofline. The black paint covering the lower body seems to begin at the undercarriage before transitioning into the red that starts just above the bottom of the doors and adorns the rest of the car (sans the black vinyl roof), creating a great visual effect that accurately mirrors the color scheme so many upper crust "SS" Chevelles of that year wore proudly. It's a driver-quality paint job, making this one of those fortunate cars that can actually be driven without worry, not just gawked at in a garage. Likely to keep the attention focused on its newly sculpted look, especially at its beltline, Chevy chose to steer clear of adding a lot of trim along its sides, but the chrome featured in both front and back represents itself well and really pops out, courtesy of the black coloring it sits adjacent to. The black vinyl interior has obviously been the recipient of a lot of care, and although it's showing some signs of a lot of happy miles traversed, it's impressive nonetheless. Both the front buckets and rear bench seats remain very well padded and comfortable, with covers that match the originals this Chevelle rolled out all those years ago. The seating is flanked by door panels on each side that sit flush to their steel frames and although they show some age from the warm Texas sun, they could easily be brought back to life. Up front, the dash area just beyond the three-spoke "SS" steering wheel remains in its original configuration and features easily readable gauges in the cluster that are joined by a trio of aftermarket counterparts sitting just below. The dash pad running across the top shows evidence of a little warping, but aftermarket pieces are readily available should you want to swap it out. Raise the deck lid in back and you'll find that the trunk area is all original and shows off its solid metal. A rebuilt and period correct "JK" code 396/325 HP cubic inch V8 sits underneath the hood, offering the big block power that became synonymous with SS Chevelles in their heyday. The engine bay is dressed to impress, featuring a chrome open-element air cleaner, chrome Moroso valve covers, and an ever-reliable Optima red-top battery. Equipped with a 4-barrel carb, Edelbrock intake and armed with a Crane Cam to up its potency, the engine sounds great as it exhales into a dual exhaust with chambered mufflers. And all that power becomes very obvious right away, due to this Chevy's impressively quick throttle response. With its featured power steering and power front disc brakes, easy navigation and low-effort stopping power are covered, as well. This magnetic muscle car classic sits on a set of 15" Chevelle SS wheels wrapped in 225/75/15 front and 225/70/15 Cooper Cobra white-wall radials.
