“THE MAN BEHIND THE MACHINE”
“well I saved my pennies and I saved my dimes… “
Ike has owned many cars since that new 409 in 1963 as he has spent his whole life around automobiles and motorcycles building and racing hundreds of cars and bikes for himself and customers along the way.
The Viet Nam War was on and Ike found his way into the Marine Corp in 1968 and came out a Jet Engine Tech. He started building custom motorcycles in his spare time and his hobby morphed into his first business in 1971, “Show & Go Cycles”, in Richardson, Texas, which just happened to be his Dads old grocery store location.
For 30 years Ike built bikes and cars in Richardson, Texas, later adding and becoming one of the premier plating companies in the nation for high-end builders and enthusiasts. Ike’s fine metal finishing work became the staple for many multi-million dollar Pebble Beach Concour Restoration Winners.
In his spare time Ike raced Top Fuel Motorcycles all over the Country.
Ike has an eye for detail like few I have personally known. He grew his shop to 15 employees over 30 years and in 2001 decided to move his family to California, working and residing in San Clemente. His shop S&S, is now Ike and his son Jason, another artisan in the automotive/motorcycle world, just like his Dad. They have for the last 15 years put together some of the most beautiful cars and motorcycles to be displayed at our local shows in and around Southern California. If you seek out the best in automotive anything, from fixes to fabrication, to engine rebuilding to full-blown restorations contact them through their company S&S in San Clemente, CA, website at:
IkeandJason.com
From the website: “We can fabricate, custom design, refurbish, or create the project of your dreams. Our passion, skills and commitment for details can turn your vision into a reality. Hot rods, muscle cars, customs, motorcycles are all in our repertoire.”
“Giddy Up... Giddy Up... Giddy Up 409!!
It had been 25 years since Ike had driven that first 409 of his youth when he started dreaming about recreating that experience. He was at an auction in 1990 and stumbled across a gorgeous survivor 1963 Impala that was born with a 6 cylinder motor. The second owner was there and began to tell him about the “freak” first owner of the car. This elderly gentleman had owned it from new and when he pulled it from the garage to sell it to owner number two he remarked that it had never been driven “even once” in the rain. Personally, I doubt that this car has rarely ever seen the light of day, except when it was occasionally driven.
Since Ike’s ownership in 1990 it has rarely been outside for more than an hour at a time and it is constantly under cover even in the garage.
Body & Paint
The beauty of the car to Ike was that it was completely original paint, interior, motor and at that time around 30K miles on the clock. The body panels and floors are all original sheet metal to the car... and yes it shows. Just look how straight and letter-perfect the doors, the hood and the trunk align to the other body panels. Close-up pictures of the shut-lines will display the exactness in fit and finish, that can never really be replicated. If you are local to Southern California, bring your micrometer and check it out yourself.
The body and paint are clearly indicative of a car having a virgin body from day one. The original body panels are all intact on this Impala and it shows in the magnificent application of it’s mostly original paint. When Ike was doing the motor restoration he decided to disassemble the front-end of the car to clean the engine area and powder coat the inner fender wells. You can literally eat off the engine, surround and undercarriage. There were a few slight imperfections in the paint from rocks over the years and Ike decided to repaint the front fenders and a small amount of the hood at that time. He dug into his concour restoration skills to carefully mix and match the paint finish to the exact color and texture of the original paint.
I consider myself an expert in “survivor” original paint as I have judged many Survivor Corvettes at NCRS Events and am hard pressed to see any variation in the paint on the front-end versus the front windshield to rear of this specimen. To say this is a masterful job of matching to the original paint would be an understatement.
If you are into laser straight original body panels, you will not find one nicer than this. It is obvious that this is the product of living a garaged life since it was delivered new from the dealership.
At the time of engine restoration the bumpers were replated and need I remind you, Ike was in the plating business for over 20 years, he did concour quality work. Any questions?
Interior
The interior on this ageless beauty is nearly impeccable. The only thing that is not original is the carpet; the time/color continuum had taken its course and with the addition of the four-speed on the floor it was time to be replaced. Other than the carpet the entire interior and all its bits are factory original. The tach was seamlessly integrated, just like it was stock, during the motor restoration. The seat upholstery as well the door panels, the headliner and dash are all completely original from the factory and are simple a 10 out of 10 on the Survivor Richter Scale. Steering wheel looks like it is brand new.
Just take a look at some of the close-up pictures under the dash of the original wiring and the corner trim pieces on the doors showing the original felt and the condition. Check out the dash (two small crack areas around speaker), the interior paint and headliner, the pedals, the knobs and door window cranks… all original and simply pristine for a survivor. Even the rubber in the doors and window surround is original and in extremely good condition. Door window chrome surround is mint as is the original glass. Windshield is ORIGINAL (the old non-tint) and in great shape. Amazing.
An original Phillips 66 Lube Sticker is still in the door jam with a date of 6-18-83 with 31,148 miles.
Time Capsule. Period.
“Trunk-a-licious”… that’s the only way I can describe it. Just take a look at all the original speckled paint, jack, and original “new” Uniroyal spare tire, having never been used. Ike put some new mats in the back, but underneath are the original trunk liners. The original jacking procedure sticker is still affixed to the underside of the trunk and is like new.
Engine and Mechanicals
At the top of that famous mill, a heavy duty double-snorkel air cleaner forces oxygen into two large 4-barrel carburetors. Fuel and air flow from the new Edelbrock carburetors into a factory iron intake that's bordered by factory Chevrolet heads and chromed factory valve covers. And this B-Body's entire engine compartment, from its Chevy Orange paint and satin black fenders, is completely restored, detailed and ready to both show and go.
The car is sporting 3.08 gears, which is perfect for cruising… and if you have watched the video already you know that is all it needs to get up and roll.
Ike had been looking for a date coded ’63 409 since the day he purchased the car in 1990. Finally around 1999 Ike stumbled across a gentleman at “Hot August Nights” that knew a local Southern California guy that happened to have a rebuilt one sitting in his garage, waiting for the right car to put it in. Ike convinced the owner to sell it. Upon putting the engine in the car Ike was not happy with the performance and felt it was 100hp shy of it’s potential; so out it came and into Ike’s shop for a full restoration. Details can be seen in the receipts section above. Needless to say, Ike did everything to perfection.
The car had exactly 36K miles on it in 2007 when Ike & Jason starting rebuilding the motor. Today it stands at 36685, the day we took the pictures.
Ike and Jason put their 50 plus years of experience in racing automobiles and motorcycles together in building this motor for themselves and one only has to listen with speakers full throttle to hear the wondrous echoing of an engine built by perfectionists.
Undercarriage
The chassis is very clean and original. Ike lightly freshened the original red primer paint and some of the black undercoating, but it is basically exactly like it was. The front end suspension was all powder coated along with the inner front engine bay panels when Ike had the engine out for the rebuild.
I have taken pictures of a few of the major receipts listed above for your review. Note Bob Smalls, the engine machine shop is notably one of the best in Southern CA for doing high-end engine machining. Bob is a master craftsman and “Precision” is his middle name.
The car drives, shifts and runs like a dream. It rolls down the road on a brand new set of B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A’s, straight as an arrow, with no shakes, rattles or imperfections anywhere in the handling or braking tendencies of this car.
This fully sorted Impala Sport Coupe is a wonderful car to drive, enjoy and haul three or four of your coolest friends in. It's really no surprise that these cars are amazingly popular with almost everyone who sees them because they have such a great combination of style, presence and performance.
Just as a matter of reference I have been collecting and restoring collectable automobiles and motorcycles for the last 40 years and am a friend of Ike. I am a member in good standing with the Porsche Club of America, the 356 Registry and NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society) for over 25 years. I have been a Concour Judge at various venues around Southern CA.
This little coupe is the kind of master piece to be added to your collection if indeed you have a penchant for low mile survivor type of cars. You would be hard pressed to find a more solid, original and wonderful driving vehicle than this example in Irmine White with Red Interior.
These rare survivor cars are getting harder and harder to find. A Survivor like this one is much like an historical document. Cars like this tell a story of its construction, ownership and care. The restoration process, while sometimes stunning, erases the originality and authenticity, and is just another “done” car. These things are special.
409. For millions of people in the world, just a number. For some, however, it is the numerical code for a phenomenon that defies technical description. To put it another way: for them, it is the legend of the Chevy 409.
You saved up your pennies.. and you saved up your dimes....
.... now it’s time to buy your BRAND NEW 409... Giddy Up.. Giddy Up...
