1971 Chevrolet Nova Coupe Description

1971 Chevrolet Nova Coupe

The Chevrolet Nova got a new promotional bent that echoed Volkswagen's approach in pitching the Beetle's lack of change as a virtue. Instead of focusing on any alterations, the Nova's sales brochure explained that, "we've been building essentially the same car since 1968. We think we've got it down pat.". These were the years of the first energy crisis as Middle Eastern countries cut back on oil exports. After waiting for hours in gas lines and fretting about the prospect of fuel rationing, thrifty compacts looked pretty good to plenty of Americans. The Nova fit the bill.

For consignment, a consigner stated "very fast" "very street-able" 1971 Chevrolet Nova. When looking at this car it's a big flex of bowtie muscle sporting a whopping 572ci V8 with a consigner stated 750hp output! Iceberg Blue helps keep things just a bit cooler on this hot hand-built version with its large scooped hood, and nice chrome. It takes on a somewhat unassuming look in your presence when just sitting there but turn the key and you are in a whole 'nuther world!

Exterior
Save for the shaving of any badging except for on the trunk NOVA, and the blacked out egg crate grille and large rearward scooped hood on top, this car appears stock and unassuming (well sorta...). The front bumper still retains its markers and air inlets to keep the radiator cool, but retains its luster, as does the rear bumper, and grille surround. Beautiful shiny Iceberg Blue bathes this car's panels, which have decently minded gaps and no dents or dings. Just small faults within the paint show in a few scratches and a section that is dulled, as well as some rust bubbling on the driver's wheel well on the rear quarter. 15 inch Centerline wheels are on all 4 corners and in front wrapped by 26x7.50-15's and in back 255/60R15's are on. It's showtime!!

Interior
Racy would best describe the interior with original door panels looking slightly wavy but in good condition. Turning our attention to the passenger compartment is down to the racing business with black vinyl high back racing bucket seats that are within the confines of a removable side bar roll cage. 5-point racing belts are on these buckets. In the center is a metal box with the B&M Pro Ratchet Shifter complete with a Biondo Electric Shift Controller. Various toggle switches are located in this area along with the transbrake activation button. Up to the dash and it is custom simplicity with an aluminum panel featuring a lineup of essential gauges, metal toggles, and a column mounted tachometer. A rally steering wheel is now on. Black carpet covers the floors and the back of the car has been stripped of any seating and panels for weight loss, but you can still put your grocery bags back there if you need to stop at the store on your way home from the track. Start your engines...

Drivetrain
The word drivetrain would be an understatement on this mill which should best be described as a rocket engine. A 572ci V8 with AFR (Air Flow Research) heads, a single 4-barrel Holley carb, and a TH400 3-speed automatic featuring a trans brake, and a manual reverse valve body. To spin the rear tires, there is a Ford 9-inch rear with 3.89 TracLoc carrier. Looking snappy and shiny and absolutely like new. Ignition....Liftoff!

Undercarriage
The gas tank has been removed and now a fuel cell resides in the trunk and large tubing and fittings feed the mill from the bottom of the tank sending hi test to the front of the car. A 3-inch exhaust system with stainless steel mufflers vents air mid section of this undercarriage. Up front independent coil springs are on and on back mono leaf suspension with Cal Trac Bars are installed. Disc brakes are on the front, and drums on the back. I did notice upon close inspection that the frame has a hole in it, and the passenger floorpan has invasive rust that has left some damage currently unrepaired.

Drive-Ability
My motor-head decoder ran this machine and has some positive things to say about it...mainly it goes like hell, and hooooly sh*$

A track car with the ability to take it to the streets, where it may be dangerous, but hey if you are not living on edge, you are taking up too much space. A fine build with the end goal of going in a straight line and doing so as fast as possible...mission accomplished, you've got a bunch of guys ready to turn blue here at Classic Auto Mall.
