BODYWORK/TRIM
The beneficiary of a detailed restoration that was completed at Hetterich's Auto Body Shop in Hamilton, Ohio, this Camaro wears a timeless coat of glossy black 2-stage that's highlighted by tastefully customized Rally Stripes. Under those striking aesthetics, solid body panels align well, forming an impressive profile that's sure to turn heads. At the front of that profile, a familiar Rally Sport grille hangs a small "Z/28" script between a broad bumper, Detroit Speed headlights, clear parking lamps and a requisite D80 chin spoiler. Behind that grille, a Camaro-branded header leads the eye to an appropriately labeled cowl induction hood, which reflects Detroit Speed Selecta-Speed windshield wipers. Those wipers clear clean, stainless-trimmed glass that's accented by traditional door handles and correct chrome mirrors. Beneath those baubles, a combination of "Z/28" and "rally-sport" emblems float amid bright wheel frames, standard rocker trim, optional quarter louvers and small marker lamps. Behind those lamps, a second bumper and second D80 spoiler trace Fesler taillights, a fourth "Z/28" script, Rally Sport reverse lamps and polished stainless exhaust tips. And all those bolt-ons, when combined with the car's fresh finish and tough stance, ensure a grand influx of memorable compliments!
ENGINE
Looks aren't the only thing that inspires great memories. Toss this Chevy's hood and you'll find a sweet GM Performance Parts ZZ502 that's been built, polished and tweaked to 9.6 to 1 compression and a killer 502 horsepower! A perfect air/fuel mixture is supplied by a big Holley 850 double pumper, which floats between an electric choke, stainless fluid lines and a bowtie-branded air filter. That carb rides on an aluminum, dual-plane intake, which is bolted between lightweight aluminum heads. Those heads hang snazzy Chevrolet valve covers between a stainless breather, stainless rocker arms, 2.25-inch intake valves and 1.88-inch exhaust valves. Those rockers are engaged by a hydraulic roller cam, which is sequenced to loomed Taylor plug wires and a modern HEI distributor. Spent gases roll through Hooker Competition headers with the help of a forged steel crank, forged steel rods and forged aluminum pistons. At the front of those components, a March Revolver serpentine drive spins an Edelbrock water pump between a polished AC compressor, a polished alternator and modern power steering. And that pump feeds a chrome-trimmed 4-core radiator that's wedged between chrome horns, a polished expansion tank, SPAL puller fans and a classy bowtie cap. Naturally, this Chevy's engine bay is just as glossy as its body. And the car's 5-figure display of power is finished in a roster of first-rate detailing that includes braided hoses, a polished firewall plate, billet fender braces, a chrome hood latch and a deep Milodon oil pan.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
When the big engine jumps to life, it spins torque through a Tremec TKO600 5-speed that makes excellent use of a tough 621 bellhousing and proven Centerforce clutch. That transmission twists big, 3.73 gears around a chrome-capped Moser 12-bolt thanks to a custom driveshaft. That drivetrain pushes a factory-spec suspension that's been upgraded with adjustable air shocks, tubular control arms and modern traction bars. Steering is smooth thanks to factory-style power assist. Power front disc and rear drum brakes employ a polished Tuff Stuff booster to provide confident stops. The 502 growls through large-diameter exhaust pipes and Flowmaster dual-chamber mufflers. And everything rolls on traditional Chevrolet Rally Wheels, which lap in 215/65R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 225/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.
INTERIOR
Inside, things appear mostly traditional with the exception of a few thoughtful upgrades. An old school bench joins modern buckets, sourced from a 2000 Camaro, in featuring vivid White Houndstooth upholstery. An attractive 2-tone dash complements Auto Meter Phantom telemetry with a Detroit Speed instrument panel, Vintage Air climate control and modern JVC audio. A traditional console floats a chrome Hurst shifter and Auto Meter Phantom accessory gauges between clean carpet, stainless-trimmed foot pedals and color-keyed, "Z/28" branded floor mats. A fresh headliner melts into Standard door panels and a two-tone package tray that frames big JVC speakers. The driver guides a reproduction Chevrolet Rally Wheel around a tilting column. And the passengers stash valuables in a fully carpeted trunk.
