1965 Chrysler 300 Series 300 L Description

1965 CHRYSLER 300L HARDTOP

History

The 1965 300L was the final year of the traditional 300 letter series. It featured a complete restyle with slab sides and a tall "greenhouse" that were introduced by Elwood Engel when he succeeded Virgil Exner as Chrysler's styling boss. Chrysler ads from 1965 exclaimed “The most beautiful Chrysler ever built, agreed”? The cross-ram engine was no longer available, leaving the 413cuin (6.8L) engine equipped with a single Carter AFB 4 barrel carburetor with a “Special Cam” and rated at 360 Horsepower as standard. A total of 2,405 coupes and 440 convertibles were sold.A popular accessory in the 1960’s was a Daytime running light mounted in the grille that was on whenever the car was running. I think the 300L was the only production car 60's car have one as standard equipment!

Hagerty Collector car insurance listed the 300L as one of their “32 best cars to restore” in 2017.

The300L hardtop featured in this auction sold new at Roy Burnett Motors in Portland, Oregon on August 21st 1965. The original Certicard and Owners Manual are included with the car. The car subsequently ended up in Redding, California in the early 1970’s and still has one of the blue and yellow Cal. Plates on the front. It was driven to Southern Indiana where I purchased it on November 8th, 1980. The mileage then was 70,000. I have always kept it garaged for the last 37 years! The current mileage is 73,610. The miles are listed asactual on the title in my name.It is equipped with the standard 360 Horsepower 413 High Performance engine, Torqueflite transmission and a 3.23 ratio 8¾ open diff. There is of course Power Steering and Brakes, Tilt wheel, a working factory AM/FM radio with rear speaker, Power windows, 4 way power drivers seat and rear defrost. The passenger seat is a recliner. It is equipped with a NOS clock that keeps good time. There is an aftermarket Sears Air Conditioning system installed when it was a nearly new car. It was originally Aztec gold with a black vinyl top and interior. Sometime before my purchase it was painted green. When I replaced the vinyl top, I changed the color to white. This a Nice original car with one very old repaint! This car islicensed, insured and on the road.

Condition

This car runs and drives beautifully. It starts with a touch of the key. I believe you could drive it anywhere. The factory unsilenced air cleaner makes a great four barrel sound! It is lots faster than most people would expect from an old green hardtop! Everything on the car works except the power quarter windows are inop and the left directional signal does not automatically cancel. The Sears A/C system operates, but is low on R12 refrigerant. It is an absolutely rustfree western car. There is a beautiful original interior and trunk. There are some door dings, a scratch in the drivers door and chips in the paint, but it is presentable with a decent shine. The chrome is acid rain damaged and would require rechroming to be show quality. The glass is all nice with the exception of a wiper scratch on the drivers side of the windshield. The engine was tired when I purchased the car. I rebuilt the engine in the early 80’s using standard parts and a double roller timing chain. I’ve only put about 3,600 miles on it since then! Recently I got the car out of longtime storage and replaced the fuel tank, gauge sender, fuel pump and all rubber lines. A restoration grade complete brake job was done including all new cylinders and the Heavy Duty Bendix booster. The brake system was converted to DOT5 Silicone fluid. All of the wheel bearings were cleaned and packed with Mobil1 synthetic grease. It also sports new heavy duty front shocks, new air shocks in the back and new front stabilizer links. It was also treated to a full ignition tune up and a fresh NAPA Legend battery. The windshield washer system was rebuilt. The vinyl top was replaced using the correct grain from SMS fabrics. The top is very nicely done! It sports 5 new 215X75R14 radial tires on the 1966 deep dish wheels and hubcaps. A matching spare and all tools and the jack are present. I can include a set of the correct wheels and hubcaps if desired. I also have several 300L specific spares that are available at extra cost.
