1978 Datsun RV Camper Motorhome Housecar camper Description
Hello, this is a rare 1978 Datsun Dolphin RV Housecar. Real cool, and cute, only weights 4100 pounds, I took it over the scales to test that. I bought it with the plans of restoring it, but don't have the time now, due to a new job. This is what I have done so far to it:
Two new batteries, one for the camper, one for the vehicle
New Alternator, higher output than stock
Removed and disposed of the tires, they were ten years old, unsafe at that age, although they looked almost brand new.
All new brakes, the rears were leaking, so replaced the rear cylinders, new brake pads, replaced the master cylinder, replaced all the rubber lines (old and cracked), and even had the shop replace the front calipers to be on the safe side. All the work was done at the Larry Miller college campus.
Replaced the fan belt
Worked on the wiring both in the camper and the lighting
Cleaned out and removed some of the "wallpaper"
threw out the cushions
Vehicle has passed emissions, needs brake lights to work to pass safety inspection. have newer cushions that fit, as well as two mattresses for the cabover camper
What it still needs (list):
It has a "swamp cooler" over the bed, the shroud is broken, I'd take it out and just cover that hole with aluminum, or put an AC unit in it there?
The roof vent over the kitchen area is broken, I bought a new vent, both top and bottom parts on ebay, that needs to be installed
The brake light(s) don't work, our best guess is the relay in the steering column, the auto college professor says to put an aftermarket turn signal relay on the column, not original, but would work fine.
Different tires, I saved the original rims, slimmer on the front, wider on the back,it originally had 245 60 14 on the rear (to look like duallys?), and I think 196-70-14s on the front. I currently have mag 15 rims on it, with 235-75-15s on it, they clear but not by much, I did some research and recommend 215-60-15s, or 225s, that's almost the same height as original, or go back to the original rims, fronts have two Datsun OEM dog cap hubcaps, I will include all eight rims, hubcaps, plus two spares
could use a stereo installed, I can throw on in on the package deal.
The camper interior needs work. There is some water and other torn damage on the paneling/walls, it could use new cushions, I have a foam rubber mattress with a top on it, and a futon/firm mattress to go with it, I also have some brown cushions for the kitchen table bench seats, The stove is older, the chrome? "finish" has some patina/corrosion/rust on it. you can refinish it, or replace it, it is the smaller 17 inch tall one, I'd put a microwave in the oven area, and a new burner top on it, The fridge and stove seem intact, the bathroom/toilet area is in pretty good shape. The roof needs some patching around the roof rack, the front swamp cooler, and maybe the window vent, roof is intact, a dent or two and such.
The exterior of the cab body is intact and in good shape, looks like no accidents, there are a few rust spots, could use a new left fender, unless you are a good welder, there is one spot about four inches round on the front left fender.
It did pass emissions, but the carb is a cold starter in the morning, once it warms up, it runs fine, I suggest replace the accelerator pump, or simply rebuild it, i have a kit for that to throw in the deal, it doesn't seem to need a tuneup, doesn't miss or anything
