Who doesn’t love the second generation Dodge Charger? This restored 1970 R/T with its numbers-matching 440 represents one of the most identifiable muscle cars of all time. It was a smashing success when new, selling nearly three times what Dodge expected. It has been a go-to car for television and movies alike. And its legacy continues on to this day.
This Charger is a genuine XS29 R/T model with a complete fender tag showing a built date of 11-25-69. It is a great example, free of rust issues or compromised sheet metal. It was painted the fairly rare color of FK5 Dark Burnt Orange Metallic (1 of 881). But even more rare is the code V1G Gator Grain Vinyl Top (1 of only 375) which really gets people’s attention. There are also factory hood pins and the black Bumblebee stripe around the back which really looks great on this car, as do the Magnum wheels with BF Goodrich tires. The pop-up fuel door and side scoops with R/T badges complete the look.
Under the hood is the original 440ci 375hp motor with matching partial VIN stamp. Everything appears factory correct including the cast exhaust manifolds and Magnum dual snorkel air cleaner. It runs strong and shifts well through the heavy duty Torqueflite automatic transmission. The 8-3/4” Sure-Grip rear is equipped with 3.32 gears for good highway performance. It all makes for a nice riding car that is a whole lot of fun to drive. The clean trunk compartment includes a proper spare tire with bumper jack.
The black interior has also been redone. It retains the factory bucket seat arrangement with center console and floor shifter. The dash has the desirable Rallye gauge setup with 150mph speedometer and N85 Tic-Toc-Tach. Note the attractive woodgrain finish on the dash and center console which really dresses up the interior. The headlights, interior lights, dash lights, heater, horn, wipers, and AM radio all work.
The Charger R/T continues to be an in-demand classic that everyone can recognize. This one brings a lot to the table with its rare configuration and wonderful condition. Whether you’re just looking for a cruise night ride or a trip down Route 66, this Mopar is tough to beat.
