Looking for some spicy Italian to add to your collection? MotoeXotica may have the answer for you in this highly unique 1948 Ferrari 166 Inter Spyder Corsa Replica. Only nine originals of this model were made and there are no other known replicas available in the United States, making this a true one-off replica stateside.

This example began in the United Kingdom in 1980. A European artisan hand-built this car, starting with a custom tube chassis and right-hand drive. The car was imported to the United States more than a decade ago and is titled as a 1948 Ferrari (Replica).

Its newer red paint is in excellent condition, as are the pair of vintage Brookland Style windscreens. The exposed headlights, combined with the fine, vertical grille bars lend the front and a bug-eyed appearance. The car’s bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is very tidy and the battery is in decent order.

This Italian replica rolls on 165SR15 radial tires. Each one is wrapped around vintage knock-off wire wheels that have been powder-coated. The wheels are in fantastic condition while the tires are in very good order.

The artisan who created this car pulled a 2.5L OHV straight six-cylinder motor from a Triumph TR6 and allegely fully rebuilt it before inserting it into this replica. Backing up the engine is a four-speed manual transmission with D-type overdrive from a Triumph Spitfire and an Alfa Alfeta rear end. The car also features four-wheel disc brakes and independent suspension with Alfetta deDion suspension in the rear and coil spring front suspension. There is also a full sized wire wheel in the rear compartment area.

In the cockpit, the black bucket seats look marvelous. The flooring and mats (no carpet) are in great condition. The metal instrument panel looks great and has all the information the driver needs without any extraneous data but the fuel gauge and the horn are inoperable. The inner door liners match the rest of the interior’s condition.

Enzo Ferrari had successfully demonstrated the strengths of the evolved 166 engine and drivetrain during his first racing season in 1947. The Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa was his first foray into constructing a competitive race car in answer to the growing interest in supporting private race customers. A total of nine Spyder Corsas were built in 1948, mostly of re-purposed components from the 1947 season.

Luigi Chinetti, a prominent race car driver and dealer in many of the popular European cars during this era, purchased the next to last 166 SC, chassis 016 I. He set the fastest lap time during his first outing, at the Spa 24 Hours in Belgium in May 1948, before leaving the race with a blown head gasket. He won the first major endurance race, at the 12 Hours of Montlhéry, outside of Paris (September 1948). Following a series of record-breaking times in international speed trials, again at Montlhéry, Chinetti sold 016 I to Connecticut sportsman and ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America) driver Briggs Cunningham. It was the second Ferrari to arrive in the US (June 1949).

Collectors seeking that one special piece to highlight or those who want something different to showcase to family and friends should not let this opportunity pass them by. Remember, only nine actual Spyder Corsas were made and there are no replicas available in the United States. This car is a throwback to an age when the need for speed grew by leaps and bounds and it was a time when most people in the US had never heard of or seen these little, red, Italian racing cars.
