The most desirable and collectible of any model; whether it is a Fastback, oupe or Convertible is the Rare “A” Code GT. The particular Coupe GT started life in DSO 72 which is San Jose, A. As a result of this and the fact that it came to Houston, exas and was owned by two fanatical owners has resulted in a car with no rust. We will furnish you with pictures of the underside of the car and also under the door so that you can see how nice and rust free this particular GT is.
It is impossible for me to tell to you all the work that has been done on this car; and it was a good car to start with. First of all the stripes on the car were not straight so we removed them and reinstalled new ones. We also replaced the old badges with new ones.
The gas tank was most likely the original tank, o we put a new one in and a new sending unit. The paint was good but, could tell that if it was wet sanded, ompounded, olished and waxed the finish would shine that much more.
New front and rear bumpers were installed which would really made a difference to the car. The antenna was probably the original so a new one was installed. The paint under the hood looked good but was dirty, o it was compounded and polished. The male latch assembly was removed, lasted and primed and painted the proper color and reinstalled. The original GT Fog Lights could not be saved so we bought new lights and reinstalled them.
When we did the underside of the hood it made the original hood trim look horrible. So again, e bought new and installed it. When the hood was compounded and polished it was readily apparent that the original FORD letters were not up to snuff so new letters were installed.
We pulled the entire interior out of the car so we could clean, olish, ouch up and replace everything. The package shelf in the rear behind the seats was original, o we bought and replaced new again. We purchased new door handles and installed. While the door panels were off we fixed one window and touched up the door panels and totally repainted both steel doors and found that both doors were original and rust-free. As you can see, rom the pictures the doors had the original factory cut outs for the door lights.
The dash was not perfect as it was subject to the Texas sun, o again, t was replaced. We cleaned and prepped and repainted the console. New wood was installed on the console and glove box. New wood instrument cluster was also purchased. While we had the instrument cluster out we fixed anything that needed correcting behind the dash. New 289 badges were installed since those on the cars were 50 years old. New console lens were installed on the rear of the console.
This GT did not have a spare wheel or tire, r lug wrench or jack. Consequently, took a jack and lug wrench from my personal collection and prepped and painted them and put the proper decal on the jack. This is shown in the pictures. I also purchased a new trunk mat and fiber board to make the proper presentation in the trunk. We pulled off the male and female latch assemblies and restored back to new condition. We also install new trunk gasket. Please notice proper date code on the trunk lid which is stamped backwards or inside out.
Now for the engine compartment; OMG as they say. First of all, ur usual supplier for our proper FORD blue paint went out of business so we had a really hard time obtaining the proper paint. This is the proper FORD Blue of a ’66 Mustang. We could have used something easier to obtain, ut it had to be correct. These engine compartment to me are a really big deal to say the least. In my opinion, he engine is the heart and soul of the car. If it does not look correct then everything else does not matter. To summarize the process so that it does not take too long to tell you; everything that can be removed or taken off was removed and those pieces and parts are all bead blasted to bare metal, rimed and then repainted proper color.
While doing this process we find items that need to be fixed or replaced. For example, n this car the belts were replaced and the top radiator and bypass hoses and clamps were replaced. The battery cable was replaced. The battery cable was replaced and a new end was replaced on the negative ground cable, lus new air filter for the Air Cleaner. The power steering pump had the wrong cap on it so we replaced it with the correct one. The hood springs were totally restored and this is not an easy process. As you will notice on this Mustang, he oil cap has a hose coming off of it which goes to the air cleaner base. This is only on California cars!! Note the proper decal on the oil cap.
I showed you a picture of the lid on the air cleaner base partially stripped. This piece had original paint on it and whatever FORD put on it to withstand gas and any chemicals. Our bead blaster which normally strips items very easily had no effect on it. We had to use a combo of items including chemicals to get this lid to bare metal. Wow! What an ordeal this was! I am sure whatever Ford used at the time it is totally illegal to use now.
Please note how nice all the fender, alve cover and other bolts look. Our process just leaves a very nice impression. Since this picture was taken, e have put on the overflow hose which was forgotten at the time with all the other items that were done. We love installing the original style decals on the cars. Decals are the engine specification on the shock tower, he important decal on the radiator core support, he front, ngine size, uto-lite spark plug and the “Only Ford Parts” decal on the air cleaner lid and base. And last but not least the Battery OK decal. I even put on a FOMOCO Antifreeze decal on the radiator.
The master cylinder gasket was leaking so we purchased a new one and installed it. We also installed an Auto-Lite battery cover on the battery. I hope you can understand how much work all of this is to do. Here is the list of all the parts that we have put on for you:
