1953 Ford F100 F-1 rare Marmon-Herrington 4x4 high desert survivor barn find NR
1953 Ford F-100 Description
For sale: 1953 Ford F100 F-1 Marmon-Herrington 4wd Ranger survivor project truck from the dry Montana high desert. If you follow these trucks, you already know just how rare these are. This is a very significant find, the holy grail for M-H fans, the best series (53-56 half ton shortbox), the best color - red (color code N, Vermillion), and has the factory flathead V8. Truck is rough but appears to be complete and mostly original. Hood and grille have been replaced (replacement grille is a 55), and M-H hood badges went wherever the original hood did. Thankfully, those M-H hood badges are now reproduced and there is a set on Ebay right now for $185 - just search Marmon Herrington. All other tags are intact including M-H ID tag and Ford VIN tag inside glovebox. (see linked Photobucket album below) Truck chassis number is M104-4-32816. Motor number 32816. Front axle number stamping appears to be 419 with an additional stamped code of "JG" and also "24 50". Half ton M-H trucks used this heavy-duty Dana front axle, 3/4 ton and larger trucks used the Timken unit. This is a very solid non-running western truck with no rot and is a great base for a restoration. Included with the truck will be a vintage hi-lift jack and roadside flares that were in it. Also included will be 2 extra wheels/tires and 2 extra headlight buckets.
Exterior: Decent condition for a 65-year old truck that's seen a life of ranch use. Original paint with some primer sprayed over in spots. Plenty of dents and dings but not rusty. Only rust spot I can see is low on back of driver front fender where the door meets the fender. Floors and underside look great. Front fenders are dented and need replacement, thankfully good reproductions are available. Grille currently in truck is a 1955, it could be sold to fund the purchase of the correct 1953 grille(they are not difficult to find). The original wood in the box is mostly intact with some boards broken. Windshield is cracked as is back glass. Top of box rail on passenger side is slightly bent, and passenger side running board has been cut. Overall very restorable truck, see more detail pics including underside at Photobucket album linked below.
Interior: Original survivor condition, needs restoration. Seat upholstery appears original under the cover and has cracks. Headliner board is missing. I don't know if mileage shown on odometer is correct, and I don't have the ignition key.
Mechanical: Complete with all the hard-to-find components. Truck is not running currently but rolls freely and steers. On an ultra-rare truck like this, completeness is more important than condition. I connected a jump pack to the battery cables and hit the starter button, nothing but a clunk and flathead didn't whirl over. Better plan on more than splashing gas in the carb and firing it. Brakes are soft and need to be bled at a minimum. The wheels appear to be the correct 16" rims, and there are 2 extra included. There is a large hole cut in front of frame on driver side for a winch or PTO. See detail pics in liked Photobucket album. This is a project truck and it WILL NEED COMPETE RESTORATION.
Pricing/Misc: Very difficult to find comps, these half ton M-H trucks never come up for sale. I've been watching, and I've only seen one other in the last ten years- a project 1955 currently for sale in Conroe, TX for $24,900. This rare truck is NO RESERVE and will sell. Montana title is clear and in my name. Reasonable transport is available, specify that the truck is NON-OP when requesting a quote.
LINK TO ADDITIONAL PICS INCLUDING UNDERSIDE (copy and paste) - just ask if you need more. Photobucket is clunky, just close the popups and if you have trouble viewing pics try the Firefox browser. I'm currently looking for a better photo hosting site.
