1976 Ford F-250 F250 Ranger XLT 4x4 highboy one owner original survivor project
1976 Ford F-250 Ranger XLT Description
For sale: 1976 Ford F-250 heavy duty 4x4 Ranger XLT highboy with factory overloads and the "big hub" front end. Sold new and lived life out west here in Montana with the same owner from Feb 1976 to May 2017, when I purchased the truck from my friend Bob, an old fishing buddy. This truck was a bit of a legend around here, it was spotted often along all the local rivers, lakes, and streams. You could bet if it was parked at a fishing hole, the bite was on! Bob drove his beloved F250 on camping, hunting, and fishing trips for more than 30 years, finally retiring the truck about 10 years ago. It sat in his yard neglected till last year when I got the call to come get it. I'm a retired engineer and mess around with old trucks and 4x4s as a hobby. This truck was a rescue mission from the get-go, Bob wanted me to get the truck running again and pass it along to someone who could use and enjoy it as he did. I got it running and used it last summer for trips to the dump and to coffee with the guys. Now it's time for a new chapter for this cool old truck. It's a great candidate for restoration, as Bob ordered it with all the desirable options - truck is loaded and out-the-door cost was $6400 on Feb 3, 1976. He also saved all the original factory documentation including window sticker, manual, warranty booklet, purchase agreement, GVW statement, consumer information sticker, title and registrations. I say "project" in the title above because even though the truck is usable as is, the engine is tired and it will need body and paint. I'll do my best to describe this local legend below, please read the entire ad and see linked Photobucket album and YouTube video.
Exterior: Original paint save for passenger front fender. Straight old truck other than the box, which has some damage on the driver side box rail and wheel well. Could be pulled out with a porta power, or source another box. Also dented at passenger rear of box. Even though it's never seen salt, the truck has some of the typical highboy rust, but nothing like the sitting-at-the-bottom of a lake rot seen on eastern trucks. Rust over passenger rear wheel and rear corner of box. Cab had a few holes in driver floor/footwell and some blisters on cab mounts(all structurally sound) I pulled the carpet, wire brushed any surface rust and prepped with Metal Ready acid etch. Then I put on POR-15, and patched any small holes with metal and POR-15 patch cement. Pics of this work are included in the linked Photobucket album, after I took the pics I sprayed undercoat on those areas. My idea was to stabilize and prevent future rust, if you do a restoration you'll want to do driver floorboard and cab mounts. There are a few blisters on back of cab dropoffs, also shown in pics. Small round rear fuel filler blank plate on driver side has rust. Small dent in roof on driver side, also tailgate is shot but I'm including another good tailgate. Truck presents well enough overall to draw compliments and onlookers at the gas station or Home Depot.
Interior: Original and very presentable for a driver. No cracks in dash pad or headliner, door panels have a few flaws and original seat upholstery has some tears under the cover. Carpet is new, windshield is cracked and needs replacement. Gauges, heater, wipers, parking brake etc all work but heater motor is noisy occasionally.
Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives out fine, but engine is tired. Probably would go a ways as is on the farm or back and forth to town for short runs. Heavy towing or sustained highway use would require a refresh of the motor. Clutch, transmission, brakes, and transfer case all work well. Transfer case and front end have both been completely rebuilt and receipts for just under $2,000 for that work are included. I've spent another $1000 since I got the truck to make it usable and reliable including new battery, fuel pump, carb rebuild and new mufflers. Bob had the stock 360 upgraded to a 390 about 80 thousand miles ago, and the 390 is showing it's age. Runs fine and pulls strong, no weak cylinders or loose bearings but it does smoke and the oil pressure drops way down at hot idle. The day I took the video it was cold, so what you're seeing there is mostly steam, but it does smoke enough to be seen even when it's warm. No noticeable leaks outside of a few drips from power steering. Truck has an auxillary fuel tank that was installed when new(listed on purchase order) but that needs a new rubber filler neck and I'm running just off the main tank. Tires have decent tread but are weather cracked. A total of 6 wheels come with the truck, all 4 original lock ring wheels and two newer one piece. Exhaust leak on driver side when cold. Headlights, park lights, brake lights, turn signals, wipers, parking brake and heater all working. Heater blower motor makes noise occasionally but it's getting better the more I drive it. Original radio is non-op. Overall very usable rig, also truck has receiver hitch and brake controller.
Pricing/Misc: If you're looking for a minty cream puff or restored show truck, this isn't your ride. If you like the nostalgia feel of an old truck and want a beater to tool around in, or want a heavy duty truck for the farm or ranch, and don't mind working on it, this could be the one. Title is clear and in my name, buyer will need to get insurance upon purchase as I will cancel mine. Truck can stay here for 30 days, after that $100/month storage will be due. Truck runs and drives, but flying in and driving it home isn't advisable, Montana is a huge state with many areas with no cell service or roadside assistance, and winters here are downright dangerous. Reasonable transport is available, and I will help load the truck on a transport.
