1969 Ford Fairlane Formal Roof Description

1969 Cobra

These were sold by Ford as not a Torino or Fairlane but as a Cobra and titled from new as a Cobra on the title. The original owner, at 39 years old, bought this from Bay Ford in San Diego and kept it the next 46 years. She loved the color and wasn’t influenced by the unusual motor. Her husband hated the car and she was the only driver for the next 22 years. She moved from California to Washington State in 1977.

The horn quit working (it’s cracked in the steering wheel) and she parked it in a backyard downstairs garage in 1992 for the next 24 years. She passed away in 2016 at 85 years old and it went into her estate. The car was unknown, until her daughter called a family friend who had a mechanical shop and he purchase it. He was the second owner and had it for 15 months.

Upon towing the car to his shop, he proceeded to recommission it. Installed were new tires, changed fluids, battery, plugs, gas tank flushed, new fuel pump, rebuilt original carburetor, new master cylinder, new brakes and bought a rebuilt 428 distributor. The original distributor is in a box in the trunk and can be rebuilt. He also removed all the emission equipment which is in the same box in the trunk.

In 1986 she had the motor rebuilt and it has gone 5,300 miles since. (Receipts for motor included). The motor starts and runs smoothly with no leaks or smoke and runs exactly as a powerful Cobra Jet should. The transmission is smooth and shifts accurately. Retains its original Ford script mufflers still working well.

The glass is very nice. All the rubber body moldings are soft. The chrome is good for its age. During her ownership, she had an accident and the driver’s front fender and door were damaged. She demanded a complete paint job and it was done quiet well. The sides are incredibly straight with no dings or scratches. She had the emblems removed because she didn’t want the attention. The second owner put them back on.

The interior is all original. Before she parked it in 1992, she had new carpets installed. The dash, door panels, seats and headliner are very nice. All the instruments work well including the radio. Just installed was a rebuilt air conditioning compressor and it blows cold. One of only 4 Cobra’s built with air conditioning.

There is no rust with only minor corrosion on the under carriage. These were specially built with a competition suspension. It has a window sticker, Marti report and original keys. One of only 2,588 built with Ram-Air.
