1994 Ford F-150 XLT Description

Before we begin, I want you to know that like you, I'm a classic car & truck fanatic and I also consider myself an automotive preservationist.I specialize in hunting for high quality survivor classic cars & trucks in need of rescuing. How Does a 25 Year Old Truck Only have 50,500 Miles?

Back in the day, it wasn't uncommon for someone to treat themselves to a weekend cruiser after retirement. In Wisconsin, this usually meant a new Buick, or Cadillac for Sunday drives to church or family events. In Mississippi, there's only one post-retirement vehicle to purchase: a new pickup truck.

In Winter, 1994, at 76 years young, Mr. James Dunn of Corinth, Mississippi, drove to Action Ford Lincoln Mercury (also in Corinth) to order a new pickup. Mr. Dunn wasn't looking to go off-roading, or wanting to haul anything; Mr. Dunn wanted a short bed, regular cab F150 with a V8 that he and his wife could look sharp in going to church on Sundays.

Mr. Dunn sat down with his salesperson and started checking the option boxes: regular cab, short box, two wheel drive. Ford’s legendary 302 V8 would power the truck, and the always reliable C6 automatic transmission (now with Overdrive) would go through the gears.

Checking off the XLT package ensured the plush interior fabric Ford used at this time and gave Mr. Dunn the quiet ride he wanted. The XLT package also offered cold Air Conditioning, along with power windows & locks, chrome bumpers, leather wrapped steering wheel, and cruise control. So far, a regular cab short box truck is semi-unusual, but not ridiculously unique. But here’s where Mr. Dunn’s order sets this pickup truck apart from the rest: the paint colors. Some of you remember the process of looking at various paint chip combinations at the dealership and trying to determine which combination would look best.

Mr. Dunn quickly realized he wanted a two tone truck, and was absolutely blown away by a new color Ford was offering for 1994: Desert Copper Metallic. It looks root beer in some light, but has a southern red dirt tint to it as times, too. Now came the task of choosing a color to go with the Desert Copper metallic. Thinking the traditional Ford Oxford White would be too bright, Mr. Dunn submitted his order requesting Colonial White, a creamier white that he thought would better compliment the Desert Copper center. Because it wasn't a regular paint color for 1994, Mr. Dunn and his salesperson were unsure if his special order request would go through, or if it would be rejected. A couple weeks went by, and Mr. Dunn got the news he was hoping for: his truck was being built as ordered!

That spring, 76 year old James Dunn took delivery of his new pickup truck. along with a Ford "Special Paint" decal in the door. Little did he know, though, that by selecting the Colonial White and Desert Copper Metallic paint combination, he’d have one of the rarest F150 color combinations ever made. Of the 455,000 F series pickups made in 1994, just 78 saw this color combination. If you’re trying to make a statement in the small town of Corinth, Mississippi, there was no better way.

Mr. Dunn was incredibly proud of his gorgeous F150 and drove his new truck fairly regularly in the early years. It was always garaged and only used in good weather. Sadly, he only had 4 years to enjoy his pride and joy. At the age of 80, Mr. Dunn passed away in 1998. At this time, the truck remained in the garage with his wife, and Mr. Dunn’s sons would occasionally drive the truck when they wanted to feel close to their dad. By 2006, the truck had just 46,000 miles and by 2012, just 52,000 miles were on the clock. Around this time, Mrs. Dunn’s health started to fail and the truck was retitled into one of her son’s names. In 2016, at 91 years young, Mrs. Dunn passed away. The sons still occasionally drove the truck and hung onto it for sentimental reasons. Sadly, one of the sons also passed in 2018 and the decision was made to finally part ways with James Dunn’s incredibly beautiful and rare 1994 F150. The truck had 50,200 miles on the odometer and I have copies of the titles in Mrs. Dunn’s and the son’s name that will be included with the sale.

My Purchase and Exterior Condition

I was shocked when I saw this truck for the first time. It was late fall, so it immediately went into storage, but I couldn’t wait to share photos with friends and family. The paint was mesmerizing, the interior was like new, and the undercarriage…well it has to be seen in person. I was told the truck was always garaged, and it showed after I received the truck. It truly is rust free and as described.

Although Kevin Marti’s services are usually used for Mustangs and Torinos, I thought the unusual factory paint warranted a Deluxe Report. Sure enough, my suspicions were confirmed…just 78 trucks were painted this color in 1994! Because colors changed again in 1995 and accounting for the heavy use most pickups saw over the years, this very well could be the ONLY F150 in existence in this color combination. In addition to the photo of the Marti Report in the photos, I am waiting for additional research items from Marti that will be included in the sale.

I’ll let the hundreds of photos and 7 videos tell the story of this beautiful truck, but I’d like to share my experience with this stunning pickup. I ran a Carfax report and as suspected, it came back 100% clean. Photos of the report are included in the listing and a copy will be provided to the buyer. I would say the paint appears to be 90+% original. As noted in the videos, the driver’s fender and at least part of the driver’s door have been painted. Ford’s orange peel in their paint has a very distinct look and after years of owning these trucks, the fender and part of the door look like they were sprayed. 99% of people will never notice…the paint match is spot on. It’s just guys like you and me who know. One other area, about 6” x 6” on the passenger side of the box looks like it was blended. Again, the paint itself looks excellent, but I suspect it was blended…maybe even at the factory...I’ve seen that before!

Please look at the photos and videos…I’ve photographed every panel close up for you to look at. The paint depth is unbelievable and it puts a smile on everyone’s face when they see the truck. It looks like there’s a wet gel coat on the paint. I swear it’s just been waxed, that’s all.

There are a couple dings, scratches, chips, and marks that come with owning a vehicle for 25 years. But overall, the truck is jaw-dropping. All glass, including the windshield is Ford Carlite original. Yes, the windshield is original, which is super uncommon. Note that the windshield has a couple stone chips in it that I attempted to photograph, but may not show up. The chrome is bright and trim is gorgeous. There is some water-spotting on the trim that I have not polished out. This is common with southern trucks and well water and can be removed with elbow grease. The drip rails are nice and show just the slightest of wear.

Interior

We’ll make the interior description short: It’s near mint. No one has ever smoked in the truck and no pets have been in it. There’s a mark on the driver’s side door panel, some light wear to the top of the steering wheel, and that’s it. That’s it. All the options work too, including the air conditioning.

Undercarriage

In 20+ years of owning ’92-’96 F150s and Broncos, I’ve only seen one other undercarriage this clean. Mike Smith, you know the truck I’m talking about! Again, with preservation in mind, you won’t find my trucks full of spray paint and other garbage to hide anything like so many people do when they sell vehicles. When an undercarriage looks like this, the goal is to preserve it…the factory decals, tags, paint dabs the plated metal, all of it. Please check out the photos and videos and smile. Yeah, they can still look this nice after 25 years.

After meticulously spending two days wiping down the undercarriage, I used a trick used by my Dad back in the day: I filled a pump sprayer with a gallon of WD40 and soaked the hell of out the underside of the truck. It dripped for a day. If you plan to drive the truck more often, I would coat the undercarriage with a “stickier” product like Fluid Film. I love that stuff.

Mechanicals

My first instinct is to always preserve. But, there’s a balance between safety and preservation, so the decision was made to replace needed parts to make the truck safe to drive regularly again. After just occasional driving over the last 20 years, the truck ran a little rough. Not terribly rough, but just not like the other 302’s I’ve had over the years. I replaced the original plugs, cap, and rotor, and fuel filter with new items and the idle smoothed right out. The fuel filter was likely the culprit, as it was pretty clogged. Acceleration was smooth again, too. Upon arrival, both rear wheel cylinders were leaking, so those were replaced and the system bled. The serpentine belt showed signs of cracking and fraying, so it was also replaced. Lastly, the entire cooling system was flushed thoroughly and fresh coolant installed. The oil and filter were changed, new air filter installed, and the suspension greased. As explained in one of the videos, the front fuel pump does not work. The original owners were under the impression that there was just one fuel pump, which siphoned fuel from one tank to the other, acting as one large system. I chose not to replace the pump, mostly because I sincerely wasn't sure if the next owner would need 36 gallons of fuel for a truck like this. If the next owner decides to replace it, on a truck this rust free, the swap shouldn't take more than a few hours.

When I purchased the truck, the tires had been replaced several years ago by one of the sons, as the originals were cracking. The new tires likely only have a few thousand miles on them. Any additional maintenance on the truck will be left at the discretion of the new owner, as I’m not sure how much they will be driving the truck. Note in the photos, that most hoses appear original, which is really cool. But, replacing these might be a good option if you’re going to drive the truck daily. The battery also appears to have been replaced in the last few years.

The Bottom Line

The truck starts right up, runs, accelerates, and shifts like it should. The alignment is spot on and the brakes are good. At this time, I am comfortable taking the truck for longer drives and have put a couple hundred miles on it since my purchase. I am so excited to put this truck in the hands of a new caretaker.
