1965 Ford Mustang GT Description

This is a great example of a 65 Mustang Fastback GT that has been totally restored from sheet-metal on up. This is not a perfect car and needs to be adjusted here and there to be perfect but needed adjustments are very minor.

The car was bought brand new in 1965 in Coalinga, California by a banker and who just one year later traded it in for a station wagon since he was expecting twins. Tom went in to the dealership with his wife to buy a brand new Mercury Cougar that was just introduced that year in1966 but was swayed by the salesman who showed him a very clean trade-in he just got. They fell in love with the car and bought it on the spot. The car traveled with them everywhere they went and even stayed in the family as it was once traded between father and son and back again.

Tom became ill and became bedridden for many years and never got to restore the car that he loved. Tom’s wife sold the car when he passed away to a neighbor who realized that at 76 years old, he would never be able to restore it and sold it to me to be restored.

The car is an “A” Code 1965 Mustang GT 2+2 with matching tags on all the right places. As the numbers show, the car was a 289 4V car with 4 speed T10 transmission with luxury pony interior. The car has been restored to be better than new with a period-correct K-Code 289 Hi-Po motor that was professionally rebuilt by Keith Hackenburger at ADB Machines in Anchorage, That drive train was improved with a full Holley Sniper EFI system including the CDI Unit, Coil and Hyperspark HEI distributor from Holley. The car runs perfectly all the time and has a digital display that shows all the functions of the motor at all times. It has been mounted on the dash and I use that for normal driving. The transmission was upgraded to a Tremec T5 transmission from Allstate Gears and the 8” differential was rebuilt using all new third member from Quick-Performance with a 3.80 True Trac system. The majority of the sheet metal is original except for fenders, door skins and trunk lid.

When I got the car, we went right to work totally dismantling everything down to the body metal to include all brake-lines, fuel lines, wiring and every attached body panels, glass and molding. The few rust spots by the driver pan was repaired and paint was stripped and primed and under-coated. Every component and fastener was inspected and either restored or replaced (mostly replaced) using higher quality material. Body was detail-prepped and primed. The base-coat/clear-coat is 4 coats of PPG Silver Ghost Gray and 8 coats of PPG Clear. Paint is almost perfect. The engine compartment was painted to match the body color.

All lights were replaced with LED system except the front turn signals that rely on an analog bulb for proper operation and all wiring harnesses were replaced with new. All new fuel lines and brake lines were installed along with everything else. In fact, most everything that is attached to the car is brand new except for the rear glass. New Pony Interior, new carpets, dash, light buckets and trim, all new knobs and switches, bumpers, fuel tank, all gaskets and grommets and body trim, all new brake parts and suspension. One wire alternator was installed and wiring modified to accommodate the system with a bus-bar system to relieve the positive side solenoid of all the hot connections.

The Mustang starts and drives well. Very powerful and very drivable with the 5 speed on the highway. 70MPH is approximately 2200 RPM at speed. I would not hesitate driving it anywhere. No overheating problems and starts easily every time. The only fix up I would do is that the car would be better with AC in warmer climate and the heater is not hooked up. The Rally pack gages also do not operate although they are mounted. I understand that you can get them rebuilt in a few places but since I rely on the digital system from Holley Sniper, I have not missed any of the gages at all.

I very much enjoyed building this car and I found that I enjoy the building process more than owning the car. I am looking for another project and would like someone else to enjoy owning this vehicle as much as I enjoyed building it.
