1978 International Scout II Traveler 'Texas truck!'
1978 International Harvester Scout Description
I really didn't think I'd ever sell this Scout because they're getting a lot harder to come by in this condition, so somebody is going to get a nice truck. This is a Texas Scout, and if you look at the photos, all of the rust on the entire truck is visible right there. The floors still have paint on them under the carpeting, the under body including body mounts and frame are solid also. No floor pans or body mount repairs for this one! Other than the rust shown in the photos, the driver's side rear end cap could use a little massaging (t has some waves in it) but that's about it for body work. It was a Texas barn find, and as such it had the carpet replaced and an interior out of a parts truck installed that was in better shape. The dash pad is uncracked, and the gauges all work like they are supposed to. I have replaced all of the belts and hoses, it has a new aluminum radiator, and at the same time I installed the radiator I put in a transmission cooler and a new air conditioning condensor (parallel flow aluminum for R134) because I intended to eventually install AC. The truck was originally an air condition truck and still has the compressor bracket mount on the alternator, however the other AC components were removed. I planned to use an aftermarket unit from Summit Racing but never got around to it, but the new condensor installed makes it easier. This summer it got a transmission service, shift shaft seals, new transmission shift cable, oil change, and rear differential service. Both exhaust manifolds have had the gaskets replaced also, as have the valve covers. The engine is a 345 which runs great, no noises, knocks or concerns ever. Transmission is the Torqueflite automatic, transfer case is Dana 20 with the floor shift. Rear differential ratios are 3.54. The only really 'non stock' item is the ignition has been converted to use a GM HEI ignition module which is mounted on the fender, gives a hotter stronger spark and parts are at any auto parts store if needed as compared to original IH ignition.
This is not a show truck as it sits, but it's a very dependable, solid driver that you can fly in and drive home if you want. I took it to the IH Scout and Truck Nationals in Ohio a month and a half ago and it runs down the road great. Wouldn't sell but have my eye on another project.
