FRANKS BABY 1970 LOTUS ELAN S4 TYPE 36 FHC S/E SPECIAL EQUIPMENT. Over the years, I can count on my fingers the number of consignment vehicles I have offered on eBay. I like to buy, own, enjoy, and then offer my vehicles for sale, so that I am completely sure of the product. I do this because it is ultimately MY reputation at stake, and I am not the type to just tell someone that it is not my problem like so many of the mega-warehouse consignment centers seem to do. That being said, the vehicles I HAVE offered on consignment were cars I either had a in building, or that belonged to very good friends and associates where I knew the level of the vehicle and spent time with it myself. That is the case with this lovely 1970 Lotus Elan S4 Type 36 FHC S/E Special Equipment coupe, which I have knick-named Franks Baby, as it belongs to a good friend that probably forgot more about cars, restoration, and mechanical repair than most could hope to learn. I have spent time behind the wheel, and I watched as this car was stripped to a shell, and lovingly restored over a period of two years to the clean, refined, and drive-ready machine you will see and read about below. If you have any questions about the car, feel free to call Frank directly between 9am and 7pm EST on his cell, which is 239.398.4101. He knows the car inside and out from the viewpoint of not only owning it, but from doing 95% of the restoration himself. I am happy to assist him in finding a new home for the Lotus, and stand as confidently behind this car as I would one of my own. VIN: 0037-J ENGINE NUMBER: G124246 UNIT NUMBER: 7012240037J The finish on the car is remarkably clean and presents beautifully, especially when you consider that the car has actually been driven and enjoyed since finished in the fall of 2013. Showing just 18,700 miles on the odometer currently, the car transfers to the new owner on a mileage exempt title, and the true, original mileage is unknown at this time. The finish, which is factory L04 CIRRUS WHITE, shows only the faintest signs of any blemishes, mainly little stone chips or other marks you would expect on a vehicle which has seen use on the road before. There are no signs of any major damage or disrepair, and the car has a lovely gloss and sheen to the finish from careful care and hand waxing since new. Glass shows to be in remarkable condition, and appears to be damage, crack, chip, and issue free all around. Bright work and trim on the car is well-above average, and shows only the most modest signs of use. Lighting all around is functional and issue free, and the headlamps open and close as they should without issue. Badging on the car is correct and clean, and only a few little marks from time and normal use to age them at all. S4 and SE badges are both intact as well. Wheels are correct steel rims, and were refinished during the restoration. They look great, and are straight and true, but do show a few minor marks from over the years. Tires show light to medium use, and have at least 75% of the USEABLE tread life remaining. Bumpers front and rear wear the correct silver finish, and are in very good condition. A European front vanity tag comes with the car, and is NOT a current or viable registration/tag for the unit! Single center exit exhaust sounds fantastic, and shows as wonderfully as it sounds. Panel fit and gap alignment is about on par with every other Lotus, and while not perfect, it is extremely good, and the car shows as lovely in person as it does in the photos, if not more so. Opening the hood reveals a clean engine bay, and great care was taken to make sure original components, or direct NOS replacements were used as much as possible when it was removed and taken down to the block for rebuilding. A COOLEX radiator was installed to assist with the almost unbearable Florida summer heat, but the original radiator was restored, comes with the car, and is ready to reinstall should you want a more original unit. Everything under the hood is clean, but keep in mind that the car has NOT been formally detailed and HAS been driven and enjoyed. It would not take much effort to degrease and scrub things down and have it show even nicer than it does. Transmission, suspension, brakes, lines, hoses, hardware and all the other assorted components were all brand new during the restoration, and still show remarkably new, given the fact that the car has been actually driven and enjoyed. I have supplied a dozen of the about 50 photos Frank took during the rebuilding process, and you can clearly see that everything was stripped to the core, and then rebuilt to the exacting standards that an owner/restorer would try and achieve. Inside, the car shows wonderfully, from the professionally restored wood on the dash all the way to the correctly sourced carpeting, and everything in between. Lotus wheel with the requisite Colin Chapman inscription shows only light signs of use since restoration, as does the shift knob. Gauges were all restored to as-new condition, and show that way to this day. All are functional, and have been calibrated as accurately as possible. Switchgear, knobs, and lighting throughout all works as it should, as do the components they control. Center console is issue free and shows wonderfully, including the upholstered arm rest. Seats are exceptionally nice, and adjust correctly as they would have when new. 3-point harnesses are installed for safety, and work as they should for both driver and passenger. Headliner is clean and firmly fit in the car, and has only a few marks from dirty hands to show, which again, will most likely disappear when you take the time to formally detail the car. Sunvisors are correct, clean, and function as they should. Interior side lamps and dash mounted lamp all function correctly. Kick panels, package tray, and knee panels are all in great condition. Carpeting is clean and black, and shows normal use wear and stainingthat your detailer can address when he cleans it. The removable panels function as they should, and fit is typical of all the Elan that you see in the marketplace. Door panels, and neat, clean, and issue free, as are the hardware and bright components on them for entry and exit. Trunk shows neat and tidy, and houses and original jack and tire chain accessories, as well as a carpeted liner and recent battery. Undercarriage shows chips, marks, and blemishes from road debris from being driven and enjoyed, but nothing that would constitue damage or require being addressed. It is NOT concourse-quality in presentation underneath, but it IS solid, clean, and well-maintained and lubricated. I am sure that Frank can tell you more about the car, his history with it, and the time and effort he invested to affect such a thorough and clean restoration. He can also delve into the driving description of the car better than I can, as he has amassed many miles behind the wheel compared to my scant 30-40 miles. I urge you to view the car in person, as it shows even better in person than in the 100 iPhone photos I have supplied in this ad. The car is currently located at Franks home in Naples, FL, and can be seen by appointment by calling him directly between 9am and 7pm EST on his cell, which is 239.398.4101. Again, I am offering this car in a rare consignment sale to my eBay follows and the public, and I have personally taken the photos, driven the car, inspected it, reviewed the build and build photos, and feel completely confident offering it you as if it were one of my own. BID TO WIN, and thanks for looking! Dealers can purchase the car on a wholesale order and are welcomed to contact Frank or myself directly.
