1971 LOTUS ELAN S4 SE. EXCELLENT CAR FOR IMPROVEMENT. EARLY CAR #0063K.
1971 Lotus Elan 1971 LOTUS ELAN SERIES 4 SE CONVERTIBLE. Description
Offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this very decent Lotus Elan SE DHC, or convertible for straightforward restoration. This car was just purchased from a dealer in the Sacramento area of Northern California. Paperwork shows that it lived in the State of Washington in the 1970's and was last registered for road use there in January of 1980. It then shows paperwork was generated in California around 1983, but it still retains it's WA title from 1979. It's current mileage could be it's origina, only being on the road in use for those 9 years. This car appears quite complete, save for the soft top front header bow/latches and windshield top finisher. It appears the car's oriignal color was White with Black interior, a crisp color scheme for a nicely shaped car.The bodywork on this car looks decent and quite typical for an unrestored fiberglass Lotus body of this era. There's stress cracking, paint shrinkage, and a couple small areas of easy repair, but nothing really outside the skills of a normal glass repair/bodywork guy. There's no major areas of damage and the floors look good. The door glass and framework appear excellent, good enough to be cleaned and installed back onto a restored car. The windshield is cracked and needs replacing. The car's interior appears complete but is pretty weather shot. Carpets have disintegrated and have been removed. The seats are quite decent, along with the original steering wheel. The car retains it's 5 important original knock-off wheels. The car is believed to have it's original Big Valve Twin Cam engine, #23612. The car has been sitting a long time, but the engine DOES turn by wrench on the crankshaft nut. We suggest a good patient soaking with penetrant in all of the bores, then carefully turning it over several revolutions by hand before attempting to start it. It may come back to life and run great ! We've had good success with some of these engine sitting idle for a long term, especially on these possible low mileage cars. The car's important X-chassis looks great, being completely straight, solid, dry and rustfree. Underneath, the car's lower fiberglass body areas look very good to excellent with hardly any damage.Overall, a desirable and rare Elan SE Convertible that is a rare find in any condition. These cars are extremely simple to restore with light components and are truly delightful and fun cars to drive when finished. Please look at all pictures and call or email with any questions. We will assist in shipping worldwide.
