1993 Motor Trend Import Car of the Year and on Car & Driver’s 10 Best List.
The 1993 Mazda RX-7 is considered by enthusiasts to be one of the greatest cars ever made. Even by today’s standards, the car is quick, light, and has a well-balanced chassis that delivers exceptional handling and stopping power. Publications in its day ran all sorts of articles and comparison tests, declaring the RX-7 a purist’s sports car. Notably, the RX-7 bested the Acura NSX in nearly every performance category and was declared a better car than the Dodge Viper. It’s no wonder that the 3rd generation RX-7 dominated overseas racing circuits for over a decade post launch.
The third generation RX-7 also took the title of Motor Trend’s import car of the year in 1993 and appeared on Car & Driver’s 10 Best list every year it was offered in the U.S.
Low Mileage Original Condition and Offered with No Reserve
This vehicle has 39,600 miles and is offered with no reserve. It has had only three owners over 23 years. The first two owners were a father and then his mature adult son.The car was purchased new from Cush Mazda (now Mazda of Escondido). Unlike most RX-7s that come up for sale, this car is stock and unmodified with the sole exception of a modest window tint that can be removed if desired.
Rust Free West Coast Car
This car spent its entire life in the west coast, mostly in Southern California. The car also spent a few years in Southern Oregon and is now in Northern California. These are all dry temperate regions of the country where vintage cars remain well preserved. This is a rust free car with a clean undercarriage. You’ll not find many vintage cars as clean as this.
Desirable 5 Speed with Extremely Rare Configuration
Third generation RX-7s are rare cars. Only 13,789 made it to U.S. soil between 1993 and 1995. From thatinitial total, 2,116 were base model RX-7s with manual transmissions, making this more rare than an R1. The base model manual transmissionconfigurationwas also the lightest model sold in the U.S. and it had the most functional arrangement. This car camewith a usable trunk, a solid roof for added torsional rigidity, and a suspension that is more livable than the one found on the R1.
From the 2,116 base model 5-speed car total, only a handful came equippedwith optional leather seats.I’ve only ever seen two, the one I own and a competing car offered for sale by a dealer at a price of $32,500. http://www.sportscarla.com/mobile/mdetails.aspx?VID=266027104The dealer sourced the car on bringatrailer.com for a high bid of $26,000, plus an added 5% buyer’s premium (all in cost to buyer of $27,300) with the runner up bid being another dealer. The point here is that this particular configuration is highly collectible, much more so than the more common touring models that come up for sale.
Also, unlike the dealer’s car, this car is offered at no reserve to the high bidder. This car also has had significant recent maintenance performed to put it into drive anywhere condition.
This RX-7 is powered by the legendary sequentially twin turbocharged1.3L rotary engine mated to the verydesirable5-speed manual transmission.
Everything on this car is in working order
If you've shopped for a third generation RX7, then you know how difficult it is to find a nice one. Many of the cars imported to the U.S. have been totaled, parted out, worn out, or turned into racecars. Most of the cars that remain road worthy have been abused, heavily modified, orpoorly maintained. Finding a low mileage, original car is difficult. When is the last time you saw any RX-7 advertised where everything works? Yes, everything on this RX-7 works!
Mechanically Sound
Mechanically, this car is in impeccable condition. The engine pulls like it did the day it was new. Both turbochargers function properly, the transmission shifts crisply, and the clutch engages smoothly. It feels like one expects a car that can go from 0-60 in under 5 seconds would. This car has no deferred maintenance.
Well Cared for, Fully Serviced, and Ready to Be Enjoyed
I acquired this car from a new BMW dealer in Southern Oregon, who took the car in on trade and shared the car’s history with me as disclosed by the prior owner.
The first owner had the car for nearly two decades in Southern California. The car was then transferred to his son in southern Oregon where it spent most of its time in storage. The car has been consistently garaged throughout its entire life and is in excellent overall condition.A list of repairs done under the Mazda Warranty as well as the recall repair record for this car is available. These records cover the first few years of ownership and indicate that the first owner was meticulous about addressing all concerns promptly.
More recently, the car hasreceived the following:
• New clutch
• New radiator andcoolant air tank separator
• New oil pressure sensor and gauge
• New stationary gear o-ring, rearmain seal, oil filter base seal
• New secondary turbo value/pods
• Newbelts, battery, rear brakes, wiper blades
I have documentation/receipts for everything listed above. The tires also appear to be in new condition, and still have some of the nibs on them. I was also informed that all vacuum lines were recently replaced and look new. (I don’t have receipts for work done to the tires or vacuum lines.)
Overall Vehicle Condition
This car presents well, and I get compliments nearly every time I drive it. It’s in excellent condition but is notperfect. Think of it as a very solid, well above average, presentable driver. I think you'll find this to be the nicest realistically priced thirdgeneration RX7 available for sale in the country. If you’ve been looking for an RX-7 and you come and see it, you will want to buy it.
Accident Free with Clean CarFax and AutoCheck
Both CarFax and AutoCheck records are clean. The mechanic who services this car had it on a lift and found no evidence of collision damage. The previous owner stated that this car was never in an accident though it did have repairs done to one fender due to having been scuffed.
What’s Not in Perfect Condition?
The paint is generally in very good shape though it has:
• Very mild oxidation on the body. This would go unnoticed by most people, unless really looking for it under the right lighting. Since this is so minor, I believe it can be buffed out. I was told this car was garaged since new, and it shows in its overall condition. The oxidationonthemirrors that is more pronounced than the oxidation on the body. The mirrors would likely need to be painted in order to restore to a factory appearance. (see photograph of mirror close up)
• A small crease and scratches on the lower portion of the left rear quarter (photographed).
• Stone chips, mostlylocated on the rocker panels.
• Minor dings and a few touch up paint spots that are adifferent red hue than the rest of the body.
• A surface-worn driver seatbolster (see photographs). The seats have no tears. I believe an upholstery specialist could recondition the seat bolster.
• Surface scratched plastic trim pieces in the interior. This is common on RX-7s. I’ve photographed the pieces around the gear shifter and radio as they contain the most surface scratches. These parts are relatively inexpensive and are still available new through Mazda (see photograph of plastic trim).
• Occasional creaks/clunks in the suspension (common on RX-7s). This is most prominent when starting the car and first driving in reverse. My mechanic noted this as a very slight amount of play in the bushings and recommended leaving it as it is because it does not impair the safety, handling, or performance of the car.
• Floor mats that could use a deep cleaning.
• The original radio drains power when not in use and it is out for repair. If this can’t be resolved by the time of sale, the winning bid sale price will be reduced by $300.
This is a relatively small list of imperfections for a classic collector car.
Both Pre-auction and Post-auction Inspections are Welcome
While pre-auction inspections are preferred, I realize not all potential bidders are local to the SF Bay Area and that you may not want to spend money to inspect a car you haven’t been guaranteed the right to purchase. This car has been described so there are no surprises.
Should you be the high bidder and desire to do so, I can assist in transporting the car to a facility in Campbell CA for an independent assessment prior to the final payment being due. Any assessment/inspection would be ordered and paid for directly by the winning bidder. Should you or your independent inspector find this ad to not accurately describe this car, I will cooperate with any request to void the sale and will work with eBay to refund your deposit. I will not accept returns or provide a refund once full payment is made and we’ve begun a title transfer process. I will offer ample opportunity for inspection both pre and post auction but the car is sold as is, with no warranty expressed or implied. Please contact me if you have any further questions.
If you are local to the SF Bay Area and would like to see the vehicle in person prior tobidding, please let me know.
